Tractor
Kubota BX2200
I just bought my first tractor and decided to go with the BX2200 with 60" MMM, FEL and 48" FarmKing tiller. I have used all three components and love it!! I have a question about the MMM tho....Can I use this mower as I would use a bush hog type or is it not "Industrial" enough? I took delivery thursday and have mowed areas that I could not with my old Ransomes BobCat mower. I just dont want to use the MMM in a manner that would damage it. Thanks!

Congratulations on your new tractor!! While I don't recommend you go out and try to bring down saplings with the MMM, I know you'll be just fine taking out weeds of any size. When I first got my BX, the first spring I tackled a recently purchased field that had lain fallow for about 4 years. The weeds were chest high, and had wold rose bushes, woody brush and reeds. The BX handled them just fine, and had only 2 problems. One was that I had to fix a flat front tire from running over previously cut woody reeds (I fixed this problem by filling them with jel...actually Soft-fil from Agco) and the other thing was that I had to sharpen the blades when I was done. The 60" mower is built well enough to handle the stuff just fine. If i was going to be doing this regularly, I would recommend getting a brush hog, but I just did it ondce, and have been maintaining the cut every couple weeks. No way could I justify buying one, much less renting one. IF there are saplings, different story...go out and rent a hog, and then maintain it with your BX.

I would do the suggestion of renting a bush hog to knock it down and then maintain it from there with the BX Mower. You don't know if there are holes or rocks hidden in the tall grass. Why chance tearing up the new mower. You might even be able to buy used hog or trim mower pretty cheap. Look around, someone may have one setting that would be glad to get rid of it... Tom

When I moved in my backyard (3.5 acres) was 4 foot tall weeds (fallow field for about 3 years) and a bunch of wild roses. I originally wanted a small bush hog for the back of the then new BX2200. Dealer said the deck was plenty heavy enough for 'light' bush hog duty. I was very worried about hitting hidden rocks and had somebody walk in front of me for as long as they could tolerate it (not very long). Then I just mowed with the deck raised. No problem, the deck eats wild roses for lunch (don't know about the tires though!). Actually stalled the engine a few times, the stuff was really thick! (I need a hay baler).

If you are mowing over woody stuff, watch out for the HST cooling fan...

I've used my 60"MMM several times now to cut 2'-4' tall weeds/grasses without a problem. Just make sure you keep the deck clean and greased and the blades sharp. The thick stuff really dulls them out. Watch for buildup of cut stiff around the pulleys and belts.

No MMM on any tractor anywhere is "industrial" enough to use as you would a brush hog. There is simply no comparison to a brush hog or rotary cutter and I would not use my expensive and fine finish mower for hogging. Tall grass and grassy weeds will not likely harm it but all the other stuff will. J

I have cleared some pretty rough stuff with my outfit which is identical to yours. I cleared for 4-wheeler trails. I run with the loader mounted with the edge about 2 inches off the ground. Bull down briars, saplings and all. Anything that goes under the loader gets cut pretty well by the mower. I make passes both directions.

I you do anything similair to this, just watch the perferated cooling air inlet grill and wipe the debris from it occasionally with a gloved hand or you will start to heat up.

I have just now developed a very slight hydraulic leak at the valve fitting for the bucket swivel up line. I mowed quite a few sweetcorn stocks down. I wight have damaged it. I don't think it will be a big deal to fix when it gets bad enough.

I gave $12,300 for the tractor MMM and loader. Later bought a 48 inch tiller, a land scape rake and a box blade. I intend to add wheels to the back of the box blade to make a leverer out of it.

The only shortcoming I have found with the outfit, is the lack of postion maintaining 3 point.

I would also sugguest NOT using your fine mower as a brush hog. Buy a brush hog is that's the implement you need. The mower deck is designed for cutting grass, not limbs. Good luck. --Jim
