I recently traded my 4720 for a 6115D and am not sure if there is a problem with it or if it is normal. Specifically, when I first start it up and run for about 1/2 an hour is has that nice diesel sound (like marbels in the engine) but then the diesel sound disappears and it almost sounds like a gas job. There is no difference in fucntion or power but it sure sounds funny to me. I have had many diesels over the years and have never seen this before. Thanks for any help or insight. It also has a heck of a vibrabtion/rattle that comes and goes but I am still trying to isolate that.

Have you talked to your dealer?

Yes, I have spoken to the dealer and they didn't or couldn't give me a definative answer if it is normal. They said this is the first tractor they have sold of that model.

The vibration and rattle may be a loose fan, that could come and go as the fan clutch engages. What ever it is you or the dealer need to find and fix it.
Did anyone go through the tractor to make sure everything is tightened up properly?

As for the engine noise and the dealers response, isn't this the same 4.5 powertech engine of old? I would think it would sound like most other Deere engines.

Looks like a nice tractor attractively priced. Enjoy it.

Is the engien computer controlled? We got a new 8330 this year and the engine changes sounds all the time due to the computer changing timing and turbo settings.

I would bet that it is the computer controlling/changing the fuel/air ratio and timing as the engine warms up. A lot of this is due to new emission standards.

Thanks to all for the help. The one thing I have noticed on the rattle/vibration is that sometimes is seems to be worse when the tractor is pitching down hill.

Our 5420 has the 4 cyl naturally aspirated. It sounds like marbles too when it starts, then over a few minutes it smoothes out. Been fine for about 7 years now.
