Not true with most 6V systems. The OPs tractor left the factory as a 6V positive ground and does not indicate the tractor has a 12V conversion. Late 8Ns with side mount distributors do not have ballast resistors, early Ns with frin mount distributors do.

Correct, it is still a 6v system and it is the side mount style distributor. Coil has not been changed, same one it's had for the last 6 years and it ohms out at 2.2 which is right on spec. if I remember correctly.

I'd be checking carefully to see if the breaker plate has a clean ground path to the distributor and engine block.

Good point Rick.

I'm not familiar with the 8N distributor, but the last point-distributor I fought with had a cracked (but not sheared-off-broken) ground wire...... took "a while" to find that one :rolleyes:.
