New E-Mail Worm

I received two or three of these attempts today, and guess that many others did too. Beware. Story below:

New E-Mail Worm Targets Hole in Internet Explorer

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Anti-virus companies warned on Thursday
of a new computer worm circulating through e-mail that purports to
be security software from Microsoft Corp. but actually tries to
disable security programs that are already running.

The worm, dubbed "Swen" or "Gibe," takes advantage of a two-year-old
hole in Internet Explorer and affects systems that have not installed
a patch for that security hole, according to Internet security
company Network Associates Inc..

The malicious program arrives as an attachment to an e-mail
pretending to contain a patch for holes in Internet Explorer,
Outlook and Outlook Express and then mails itself off to addresses
located on the victim's computer.

I'm very concerned about getting a virus on my PC and have established a simple policy which has kept me virus free for many, many years now.

I do not open any email attachments for anyone I don't know.

I do not open any email attachment from anyone I know unless it is something they originated (e.g. I won't open anything forwarded to me).

I won't open any email attachments from anyone I know unless I'm expecting it, know they originated it and have confirmed with them that they sent it.

I believe if you do those three things you'll be virus free from the internet.

gary : i do the same thing> not sure it will keep my pc virus free , but it will sure cut down the odds.one of my desires in life is to spend a few minuets with a person that starts a virus, /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif would MAKE MY DAY /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I got that email worm you were talking about tonight. And also at the same time I got a undeliverble mail one at the same time. It was also from it said Micosoft. So I just deleted them. I don't know why Norton hadn't stopped it. Maybe it would have if I had tried to open them, I'll never know they are gone.

The only way Norton will stop it is if you have the September 18th virus updates. I got the virus and it is one of them that will actually open itself just by you hi-lighting it to delete it. I had a mess at work and am getting that virus on our computers about 20 times a day. It wasn't until late in the day on the 18th that I could get the new Norton updates. My recomendation is to make sure you get the updates dated 9-18 and then run a scan. To get the 18th updates you may have to do a manual live update.
