A big gum tree had fallen into the pasture a couple weeks ago. This past Saturday was dry and pretty enough that I cut it up and moved all of the debris to a gully with the tractor and grapple. The job was uneventful and everything went well except for the fact that my 30 year old Husky 61 just about wore me out. I used my little Stihl 170 for most of the limbs but I had to use the Husky with it's 18" bar to cut up the trunk and big limbs. The Husky cut fine but I had a heck of a time keeping it running, starting it back up after stopping and it also weighs 26 pounds fully fueled.
Sunday morning I was thinking, I'm getting to old to run a 30 year old, 26 pound saw that's also hard to start and keep running.

Since it was raining yesterday I spent most of the day researching lighter weight saws that would suit my needs and not break the bank. Out of all the bigger names the Echo 501p seemed to offer what I wanted. I went to my local dealer that sells Echo, Stihl and Husky to see what he had. It just so happened that he had a 501p with an 18" bar in stock. He gassed/filled up with oil, cranked and checked everything out. He even let me make a few cuts on some oak logs that were laying out front and it zipped right through them like butter. He told me that he had sold quit a few of the 501p and that it should cut better than my old Husky. I wrote the man a check and left.

After getting home I put the saw to work cutting up big maple that came down a couple weeks ago. I had it cut up in just a little bit without even breaking a sweat. Man this Echo cuts! Cutting up the 16" maple didn't even slow it down and at 14 pounds, limbing was a breeze.

Thank you guys that reviewed the 501p.

I've had mine a couple years now and it's been great. Starts so much easier and consistent than my other saws.

Yes, I remembered your review of the Echo and reread it Sunday. Glad to hear it's still doing well.

Was that a typo? The spec weight on a Husky 61 is 12.8 lbs for the powerhead only. How do you manage to get to 26# by adding an 18" bar and filling it up with fuel and oil?

I weighed both of the saws at my work on electronic scales that we use to ship packages. As far as I know the scales are accurate.
