New equipment with discontinued parts?

A lot of places are selling small equipment with the Briggs 021032-0562-E1 engine on them. This is a pretty common engine and it uses a part that is used on a lot of other engines as well.
I am talking about the air filter (part # 790567).
Briggs no longer makes this part.
While I question the ethics of a manufacturer selling engines with parts that are no longer made, the question remains, what can be used as a replacement for the air filter housing (with integral choke) or the cover for the housing?
Has anyone found suitable replacements?

Yes, they LIST it. But when you order it, they wait a day or two and tell you that the manufacturer no longer offers it.
Same is true for a number of sites. The others say "call us" in the price column.

Nothing is wrong with mine. A friend "lost" the cover off his. Not replaceable.
Another acquaintance broke the choke lever. Again, not replaceable.

The real problem, as I see it, is twofold:
1 - New equipment being sold with an exposed plastic part that is no longer made.
2 - Neither the manufacturer nor any parts house will suggest a replacement. Remember, NEW equipment is being sold with this irreplaceable part.

After some nosing around last night, I did find a replacement. Not the exact same shape as 790567, but it fits the same carb. And will probably serve as a replacement in most cases. And it costs about half what 790567 cost before it was discontinued.
