Tractor
Yanmar F16D
A newbie here, just bought my first tractor. I have been reading alot of the previous posts and that was a major influence on my buying a yanmar. Great tractor! There is one problem with mine, the rear wheel drive does not work. FWD is fine, was told that the pinion gear is missing. Is this a major problem or one that a novice might tackle?

That is a pretty involved procedure. One rear axle has to come out, and the rockshaft housing also has to be removed. You probably need to take it to a compact tractor mechanic. Most likely the spider gear is shot.

Thanks for the info. Sounds rather involved for me. That is just is what I was told about the tractor. Could it possibly be something other than the pinion gear that is causing the rear wheel drive not to work?

I hope you got that tractor for a really good price because no matter what the problem is, it's going to be expensive, assuming you can find the parts. Meanwhile, I wouldn't put too much stress on that front wheel drive. It's pretty lightweight compared to the rear and is intended only as an assist.

You can get a look at the pinion and other gears in the rear end by taking off the hudrolic control unit. Takes a little time but is not too hard to do. If the pinion is missing someone has taken it out and decided not to make the repair otherwise the ting is broken and pieces of it are in the bottom of the housing.

I purchased the tractor for a what I thought was a good price at the time ($1300). Excellent shape and only 1095 hours. The only thing that didn't work was the rear wheel drive. But maybe I bit off more than I can chew?!
Didn't think using only the FWD was good idea so have only been using it to move around. Plan on digging in and trying to locate if the pinion is indeed what is needed. So far haven't found any shavings in the fluid drain, so that is good sign? What a great website and helpful people. Almost to much info, causing brain overload!!!

That's a good price IF you can find the parts and do your own work. Parts tractors are just about the only thing available for the F model Yanmars. If it needs the pinion gear, you will also have to buy the ring gear as they come as a matched set, and I doubt anyone would split them up.

It is the brake pinion shaft, not the ring & pinion gears.

Sure would be nice if I could read Japanese. I have a parts manual. Are you saying that it is the brake pinion shaft that is causing the rear wheel drive not to work?
