Just bought my daughter a new Civic w/the 1668cc VTec engine and it calls for 5W20 oil through the entire temp range.
Thats a new weight for me.
Since it makes mention of synthetic oil being acceptable and not voiding the warranty, I'm gonna assume that the std Honda oil is 5W20 dino.

Also, the oil change interval is every 10k miles for normal use and the 1st acheduled oil filter change is at 20K!
This is in the owners manual as well as listed on their customer care site.

I've had outstanding results going w/oil & filter change & tire rotation every 5K on my F150 w/115K miles on only it's 2nd set of tires (which also called for this service every 10K miles btw) but I suspect I'll be doing the 5K interval on this Honda.

Whatdaya think, type-oh or just an outstanding engine /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think the 5W-20 has been a fairly common recommendation in lots of vehicles for the past 5 or 6 years. That's what our 2001 Ford Windstar uses. As for the oil change intervals, I don't know; 5k to 7.5k miles has been common for quite a few years, but I don't know about any longer than that. And an oil filter change at every other oil change is also a common recommendation and has been for many years. Now I know the manufacturers know more than I, but I still just can't bring myself to change oil without putting on a new filter every time. And I may be wasting money, but I still change oil & filter every 3,000 miles. If I did more highway driving instead of so much city driving, I'd probably increase that to 5,000 miles.

Outstanding engines. I have 2 hondas, a CRV and a Pilot. Both get full syn and oil changes every 10K, (with great used oil analysis). As soon as the warrantees are up I'm going to 15K, (twice a year changes).

I'm a syn convert - extended oil change durations and better gas mileage than dino. For me full syn is cheaper to run than dino.

YMMV

10K miles is a drop in the bucket with a good oil. I have been doing that longer for years on synthetic's.

Will be going 14K on this interval on the Lexus. Normal duration for me....

The shortest oil interval for me was drained was back in 1993 (7,500 miles) before I really knew and understood these oils.

I must agree that use it is cheaper in the upfront and long term cost....

5-20 was originally formulated for Ford but now other carmakers have picked it up. Several oil weights started out that way. Mobil 1 0-40, for example, was formulated for Mercedes.

One more point about longer oil change intervals with synthetics . . . . newer cars generate very little pollution out the tail pipe. If you change your Lexus oil at 3,000 mile intervals with inexpensive oil you will generate three times the waste as doing so at 9,000 mile intervals.

Experience in our service department tells me you could probably go longer than that (backed by oil analysis) but that leads to another consideration . . . extended service intervals reduce the number of times that a trained technician looks under your car for potential problems. As a result more cars come in with things like grinding brakes and ruined rotors where before we'd have seen them when doing a service.

Of course, if you change oil at a quick lube the minimum wage kids there are not likely to see stuff like that anyway so that benefit of more frequent service disappears for those people.

Longer drains are great and again have been doing for years (since my old 1991 5.0 days). Then in fall of 96 I began doing 10K drains mine on my powerchoke 7.3L diesel…This is when I began understand the great functionality of oil analysis and its power to monitor the oil condition and to benchmark the engines wear characteristics or patterns.

For me, a short 9K drain is a waste and go a greater distance on the oil since I know it performs well. Unless the numbers on wear and TBN (and others) support a shorter drain.

Oil is not integral to the other maintance on the auto .You sill need to rotate tires, drain coolants etc. For me, the “trained technician”, I trust my judgment since it is not as influenced as much on profit & greed. These items, at least for me, are a HUGE and I mean huge markup at Balise Lexus. Example, they want over $300 for front brakes. My cost is half that with OEM parts.

Now longer drains are not for everyone. If people like doing short drains (not supported by data) that is great. You will just need a larger container for all the used oil...Have fun...

I see you are in W Springfield? About 20 minutes from Westfield. I think you are on the same road as Namco and S&W sports center?

That's right, we have the automotive complex next to those two buildings. But Namco moved out to Boston Road. Did you see that from our web site www.robisonservice.com ?

Stop by for lunch one day, or call 531 6377. I was an engineer in an earlier life.

We have a 03 Honda Odyssey and love the power ,ride and reliability. It uses 5W20 and the Prizm (Corolla) uses 5w30
I try to change every 5K both filter and oil. I did find out one interesting thing the other day from our dealers service department.
Honda does not have a filter on any of there transmissions.!!!!!!!
That is why they say to change the oil every 30k miles.
Like on the van it holds a total of 8 or 8 1/2 qts ,but when you drain the pan you only remove 3 1/2qts. If you use to tow or city driving the service felt 12-15k miles would be better. He also told me and the manual says the same thing not to use dextron III . If so you have to drain and refill 3 times to remove the dextron and have there fluid. He told me they have people come in complaining about hard shifts and the majority of the time they have changed the fluid and put in Dextron III or there transmission will go bad.
Sorry for the long commit. Also they say if you do take your vehicle to so other place to have fluid changed..DO NOT let them flush the transmission. He was telling me most of the time the transmission will go bad in 5-10k miles. No he was not trying to get me to let them do the service., because I had already told him I always do the transmission and oil changes myself. True I did buy there oil for transmission maybe 50cents more than other locations for Dextron III and I do by there oil filters with in pennys of other locations. Good luck with yours
