Hi all, I take it that there is supposed to be the primer piston moulded onto the primer rod. I think it is sitting at the bottom of the tube and is possibly blocking the fuel flow, as the machine appears to be starving.
Time for a new primer pump? Jinma 254,Cheers.

The parts manual for the Y385 engine in my 284 does not show a breakdown of the lift/hand pump assembly. I removed it all years ago when I couldn't keep the seal between the lift pump and IP crankcase from leaking.
I still have it and even think I know where it is in the shop. I can take it apart to see how it is supposed to be if you would like.

Thanks Piper, looks like a new pump on the cards. The unit was leaking a bit as well, from around where the spring sits.

The lift pumps are pretty generic, just make sure the hand priming pump (not serviced separately) on the one you order is on the same side as yours. Better yet, just remove it altogether and go electric.
Pics also show diesel bug corrosion damage. Note pitting on check valve seats. Even the manual pump would not work.

Apologies Piper, didn't mean to steal your thunder. I just had these pics from years ago. Thought they might help.

Thanks Bob, good to see what's in there.

Did I mention that I tossed that lift pump too? Went electric and no problems since. I might also mention that my Kubota powered skid steer and the Mitsubishi powered excavator both have factory installed electric pumps.

No problem Bob, glad you saved me the effort. :)

Mounted the new pump yesterday, fired up and runs ok, haven't used it yet.
Think the fuel starvation was due to the in-line filter in the feed line banjo being blocked up, didn't know there was one there.

Did you go with electrical or stick with the mechanical pump? Just curious.
