This is a great forum, I have been visiting the site for a few months.

I just got 2 gas caddy's delivered this morning(made in China). One of them has a lot of slag/debris in it. One piece was about 4" long by 1" wide along with several pieces of wire. I used a magnet to remove as much debris as I could but I know it's not all gone. What worries me are all of the small pieces mixing with the fuel. I am going to call the company that I bought it from to see what they say. I was thinking of having them send me a couple of magnets that I could put on the opposite side of the tank that the suction pipe is. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

I used a shop vac with a tube duct taped to reach all the way inside it and to hopefully suck out the remaining debris. Then I rinsed it out with fuel. Hopefully it is clean now. I'm still concerned that there could be loose pieces of slag hanging on that I can't see.

If there isn't a filter/screen on the suction pipe I'd add one, or two. As a matter of fact I'd probably add one outside the tank between the hose and the tank you're filling. That way you can see the debris as you us the Caddy.
When you stop seeing stuff you're tank is good. They have gas tank "paint" that you can use to stop any more decay from accuring. I haven't tried it, but people swear by it.

Thanks for the reply Wedge.

There is no filter screen that I know of on the suction line. It's a pipe welded inside of the tank. The hose coming out of the pump is a cheap clear plastic 1/2" line that is kinked in several areas. The metal nozzle opening is 3/8". Any ideas on how to filter the fuel? Here's a link that will have a picture of it. It's the Troy 25 Gallon Gas Caddy. http://www.maxtool.com/product/search.asp You have to search for "gas caddy".

I bought a similar gas caddy from Northern Tools years ago and loved it. But these seem to be very poor quality. I got them for $259.00 each delivered(25 gal.). I think they are $399.00 from Northern plus shipping. One of the fuel gauges doesn't work either. I am going to email the company and see what they say. For the price, I could buy new pumps with good hoses and it would still be cheaper than any other ones that I could find.

Thanks,
Jeff

There is a 1" opening at the top of the pump housing that the hose hooks upto. I can set up an inline filter from there. Hopefully it won't slow down the flow too much. The only problem with that is that I am planning to fill the caddy by sucking diesel out of an auxiliary tank on a pickup truck. Is it OK to do that or should I remove the filter when filling the caddy?

The instructions for this thing are hilarious. Here's a couple lines: "When put the oil to the caddy through the oil input opening, please put oil not quickly to avoid the oil flowing from the end of the opening". "Connect the oil pump to the pipe and tighten it, please control the pump handle position to the outside direction of the caddy so it can be rocking-turn". "Be sure the oil is cleaning and there is no dregs inside". All of the sentences end in semicolons instead of periods.

Jeff I was thinking more along the lines of funnel with a filter in it. If not I would get a "big" fuel filter from an auto supply place and put it between the Caddy and fuel tank that you're filling. I'd want easy access to the filter so I can either clean or change as requiired.

course you realize that after you go through all this you'll probably neve see a single piece of debris, but if you dont do it you'll end up with enough metal to cause problem for the tractor. At least that's what Mr. Murphy's telling me. He's standing right here behind as usual.

Remember in case anything does get though, the filters in you tractor fuel system should catch those.

Wedge40, I think you are right, I will try the funnel with a filter. After using a magnet, the shop vac and rinsing out with fuel, I am pretty certain I got almost all of the debris out. I also agree about Mr. Murphy and would rather err on the side of caution.

I emailed the company 2 days ago regarding the debris he tank as well as one of the fuel gauges not working and I haven't heard back from them yet. They have a excellent rating on ebay so I assume they will make things right.

Thanks,
Jeff

I went nosing around the web site you posted and seen that they have plastic fuel caddy's as well. The cost was more but shouldn't have to worry as much about debris in the tank.
I know if it was me I'd have gotten the metal ones because of the price difference.
