Kubota L3000
After reading an article on the new generation diesel engines being designed to meet the EPA and Europe's agency it I wondered if compact tractors also have to meet these standards.

The article mentions farm tractors and other off-road equipment but does not say if there is a horsepower at which these standards apply. This could seriously affect the price of new tractors and require on-board computers.

Computers are okay, in many ways they make things run better, but I don't like the thought of one being hidden somewhere on my Kubota.

Here is the website where this article can be found.

Yes farm tractors have to meet these guidelines as well.

Hi...

Quote from a current Kubota brochure...

"E-TVCS Diesel Engine
Kubota's Three Vortex Combustion System (E-TVCS) provides increased airflow into the combustion chamber, where it then mixes quickly and evenly with fuel from the fuel injection nozzle to produce greater power efficiency and cleaner emissions. This diesel engine found in the new Grand L30, exceeds CARB (California Air Resources Board) certification for ULG (Utility, Lawn and Garden engines below 25hp), considered the world's most stringent regulation for diesel emissions. What's more, surpassing these Tier-1 regulations for cleaner emission means the Grand L30 is suitable for livestock work."

I fear computers and other solid-state devices are here with us to stay. I am sure that more than a just a few manufacturers already use them in one form or another. I am familiar with New Holland using Sensitrack, which automatically puts the needed HP to all 4 tires automatically. I'm sure they are not the only ones using such a setup and I'm not so sure that it's a bad thing. Computers have been managing our automotive industry now for quite some years. Progress is about change, good, bad, or indifferent.

That old 8N looks more attractive every day.

Dave:

I don't know about all that hoopla that Kubota puts in their literature but the engine in my 5030 runs really clean, no smoke at all. Just a little puff when I start it for about 2 seconds. It seems to go a long way on a gallon too.

In a moment of weakness a month ago I sold my old 8N. I really like the Kubota and hope I get half as many years of service out of it as I did with the 8N. I had the 8N for almost 26 years with no problems, just a new set of tires.

The Kubota runs great, is good on fuel consumption, and it has power steering. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you keep the Kubota for 26 years and sell it, I don't think you will get as good of a price compared to a 26 year old 8N.

Thinking about it, in 26 years, we will probably be running our tractors on hydrogen fuel cells!!
