Ok Asylum here is your answer to one of your questions. I have a 2008 Chev 2500 HD with a 6.0l / 6 speed auto trans. It is an extended cab with few of the bells and whistles. I get 15 miles/ gal up hill down hill around town or on the hwy and loaded it will drop to around 13 mpg. I have more than enough power to pull my 10k trailer with my 7k tractor and equip. I pulls like a dream and rides great loaded and unloaded.
In my Opinion (which is worth exactly what You are paying for it) I could not be happier with any other size or brand truck for my uses and needs.

That's great!

The only change I wish I made was a dually. I need the wider service body for more tool storage! :(

Love the rest of the truck.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the new 6L80E 6 speed is also a double overdrive, like the Allison I have in my 3500. (I think it's a 6L80E, but I'm not sure if that's the name).

It is actually a 6L90. Specs can be found here (uses excel and word) GM Media Online: English

It is a double overdrive without a true drive.
1st - 4.03
2nd - 2.36
3rd - 1.53
4th - 1.15
5th - .85
6th - .67

Thats a low first gear. Should give it good grunt. Do you happen to know what the reverse gear is?

REVERSE = 3.06, no where near as low as 1st.

The nice thing about this 6 speed is that you can run a high number rear axle and still get decent mileage with the tall 6th gear.

The 6 speed is a big help, but the 8.1L was the last GM gasser that could pull as well as the Ford V-10 and had similar power specs. It also had the ally behind it, making the 8.1/Ally a bit better than the V-10/torqshift, IMO. It just wasn't as really refined an engine as the V-10.

The GM 6L gas was built as competition for the Ford 5.4L triton, not the V-10.

GM just doesn't have a horse in the race right now in big gas power and it won't change until the 6L is replaced.

I really don't know what GM is thinking here. Maybe they're trying even harder than Ford to force guys to buy diesels.
