I took the tractor out of the shed today to do some barn cleaning. When I have the hydro pedal down half way or more it makes a slight whinning /squealing noise. It only does it when the pedal is about half or more. Its hard to pin point, but it sounds to be around the middle of the right side under neath. Like in front of the hydro pedal. It kinda of sounds like when a hyd. pump is low. I checked the dip stick behind the seat and the level is fine. It was about 30 degrees today. I have had it out in the upper teens and no problem, so I don't think it was from the cold. Any suggestions would be greatly appriecated.

When was the hyd. filter changed last.It sounds like thick oil or a dirty filter. How cold was it last night. Take som time and fill out your bio. and we will know what part of the country you are in and what kind of weather you are having.

It was about 30 when I ran it. It was about 20 the other day when I ran it and it was fine then. I recently purchased it and have not changed the filter yet. I was waiting until it warmed up a little.

Could it have ran a little longer before you moved it the other day. The biggest thing in these tractors is keeping moisture out of the hyd. system. If the hyd.fluid and filter haven't been changed in a while it could have moisture in it. When it gets cold it turns to ice. I woul change the hyd. oil and filter and engine oil and filter since this tractor is new to you.

This is one reason I change my fluids in the late fall. That way, during the cold winters in Wisconsin, I don't have any questions like this and I don't have to change fluid in 20 degree weather in an unheated barn. Brrrrrrrr!!!!

Rusty, I tend to think Bill is onto the problem, probably the transmission is not completely warm. Also, try changing ranges. Are you operating in the lowest range when you hear the whining? It's really hard to know exactly what somebody is hearing by verbal description. I would say my HST whines and groans, but I've never thought it was squealing. Whine is normal and groan is when you really load the transmission at lower engine rpm. For your noise, I'd suggest giving 20 minutes for the tractor to warm up, having the engine at least 2000 rpm or more, and use the lowest HST range. If you still have more whine than normal, you might have a problem. For faster warmup of the HST in cold weather, you could block off part of the HST cooler and radiator with some cardboard in front.

I let it warm up for ten mins. or so. In low range you can barely hear it. I notice more when in mind range. I am going to get filters and oil tom. Oil and hyd. and get that all changed and go from there. I won't get it done until this weekend so I will let you know if that cured it. Thanks for all the help so far.

Rusty,

My 24da made the same squealing noise as you described especially when it was run below temps. of 30deg. or so. It has not done it since I changed all the hyd. fluid and filters. I have to agree with Bill about the moisture in the hydro system. I too change the hyd. oil in the fall. Glad you got things worked out!
