have a new holland tractor and the starter dies. I cleaned it out now it works like a champ, and I see the bendix gear pops in and out as it should.

When I install it, though, it sounds to me like the starter gear is turning but the engine isn't turning over.

Any ideas?

On most starters the gear on the bendix works like a rachet. When the starter is trying to turn the engine the bendix locks up. When the engine starts and the flywheel is turning the bendix, it freewheels so you dont spin the starter ans fast as the engine. It sounds like you bendix is broken and freewheeling all the time. You will have to replace it.

if it was freewheeling all the time how could it be turning the flywheel at all? sounds like the flywheel turns but the engine doesn't..

what makes you think the flywheel is turning.

By sound. Couple of things:

1- I mounted the starter on one bolt (kind of hanging in the air to test the motor and the wires) just to make sure the gear popped in and out as I turned the key. All ok.

2- I mounted it in place and the sound was very different when the key was in the start position. when I release from the start position the sound stopped (sounded like something turning) but I can still hear the starter motor spinning down (and finally stopping).

The sounds when key was in start position in case 1 and 2 were very different, but when I release the key the spindown noise was the same in both cases.

BTW, everything was working fine until the starter just died, so I kind of think it has to be the starter too but it seems to be fine...

There are only 2 things that can be wrong if the starter spins and the engine doesn't. (1) The starter drive is bad/damaged and won't turn the engine, or (2) The ring gear on the flywheel is slipping.

To check the ring gear, remove the starter. Take a flat tipped pry bar and reach through the starter hole and see if you can turn the engine. If the ring gear just spins on the flywheel, then there is your problem. If not, then your starter drive is bad.

I hope it is just your starter drive. That is the easy one to fix. :D

Let us know what you find.

been a while, got back to it. I took the starter off and took the pry bar to the gear and can turn it pretty easily. Please don't tell me I need to crack the tractor in half....

Does the engine turn over when you turn the flywheel?

If no, then you have to split the tractor.

If the engine turns, that means the problem is in the starter. The starter drive is bad. It sounds like the gear on the drive is slipping. I would take it to a good rebuild shop to get it repaired.

an old trick in trying to see if starter drive is bad is put the starter in a vise get another battery fully charged hook up cables pos to pos and neg to neg the starter should spin before you do this part get a good oak hammer handel or some other hard wood and have in hand when the starter spins push the wood into the gear if you bog it down you have a bad drive this is common. if this does happen get me the starter number and i will quote you a price for the drive

thanks
