Tractor
new holland 1720
Hello guy's, I have a 2000 New Holland 1720 4x4 with 32 actual hours on it. This tractor has set in the machine shed all its life. I have put on about an average of a little over two hours a year on it.It has the 12x12 shuttle shift on it which has always been real stiff to shift from forward to reverse. I just always figured it was because it was new and not broken in yet.I decided to use it today instead of my usual ford 3000 to blade snow with thinking that I really need to use it more. I don't know if it was because it is so cold out and the oil was stiff or what, but the shift lever was still very stiff and several times the tractor popped out of reverse, which it has never done before. It almost acted like it was not fully engaging in the reverse position.Any expert opinions on the stiffness or the popping out of reverse? I don't know if there is something I can lube up or adjust. I am not too familiar with the 12x12 shuttle aspect. This little gem has not even had anything hooked up to the PTO yet.

Thanks
Longbowsteve

Lube all the external shift linkage with your favorite penetrant. Remove the rectangular steel panel mounted vertically below the steering column to access everything. Soak both the F/R and 1-2-3-4 shafts well where they enter the transmission cover. And start using your tractor before it atrophies!

RickB, Thanks for the tip about lubing the linkage. I took the panel off this afternoon and sprayed some PB blaster on all the linkage parts and where they enter the tranny too.Everything still looked new under there, but extremely dry.It is still tight, but shifts a lot smother and feels like it is fully engaging in gear. It was very cold out today and I did not have the tractor plugged in, so I have not actually tried it out yet but it sure feels a lot better.

Thanks again!Steve
