New Holland 1920 External PTO Clutch Adjustment ?

I have a 2000 New Holland 1920. After adjusting my clutch linkage to 1/2" or so of free play, I can JUST get my PTO engaged without grinding. I'm sure my transmission disk is well worn and will need replacement, but I'd like to get some more time out of it before splitting it (not looking forward to that).

So I tried to adjust the PTO clutch through the access holes on the side of the bell housing, but the holes are only 1" diameter instead of the 3"x2" I see on some others. I cant even see the adjustment bolts, but if I could, I doubt I could even fit a wrench in there.

I assume I'm just SOL and this model isn't adjustable from the outside, but maybe I'm missing something?

Nope, you have it all figured out. Split it and fix it before you damage the sliding and fixed PTO drive gears. Splitting it sooner rather than later might allow you to just replace the friction discs and release/pilot bearings rather than the entire clutch assembly.

With the right tools but no lift (doing it in a driveway), about how long should it take for two guys?

Also - any risk keeping the clutch adjustment at just 1/2" free travel?

I would say no risk @ 1/2" freeplay if it is truly freeplay. Can't estimate time, don't know if the second guy is helping or hindering, or if the first guy knows anything. I never worried about doing a job fast, I'd rather do it right. That said, a 1920 isn't hard or complicated to split.
