New Holland 555e MF 135
hello. new forum member. Could use some advice. I have a NH 555e. Im flushing out the transmission fluid, nasty..embarrassingly so. Ive always had trouble reading the transmission fluid dip stick. If you look at the owners manual it says to check the transmission level when the engine is idealing? so never understood that as well.

anyway. the specs are that the machine holds 4.5 gallons. that includes whats in the lines and cooler at the radiotor. So im flushing out my system. dump whats in there, and put in 4 gallons of replacement fluid. but if you look at the dipstick, it looks like its way overfilled?

If anyone can advise / what am I missing? this is a 2000 model, powershift 4 *2. the boot that connects the shifter to the trans is decayed away, believe this is where the water and dirt had gotten in. fluid was like a coffee with cream color, looked terrible. hope didnt damage trans. but i dont want to overfill it now that Im cleaning out system.

thanks for any help...Pete

Tranny holds 4.5 gallons. You will never drain anywhere near that amount out because of the cooler, lines, and most importantly the torque converter. Obviously, you overfilled it, time to drain some out. Most machines with torque converter transmissions (including cars & trucks with automatic trannys) specify checking the transmission oil while running at idle. If you lay the dipstick on a paper towel, the wet mark left is easier to read than clear oil on a stick.

Rick. I appreciate it. Had flushed the tranny again this afternoon, still has a coffee with cream color. When refilling hit the full mark with 2 1/2 gallons of fluid. So going to put a few hours on it, flush it again; and repeat until coffee color is gone. I attached a picture of the rubber boot where shift lever goes into transmission. As you can see, pretty bad shape. Looks pretty easy to replace, looks like just remove the bolts where it connects to top of tranny, disconnect the shifter. Please let me know if you have any advice / if you can think of anything I might be missing with this. thanks IMG_20130901_142756_505.jpg

Looks like you loosen up the pinch bolt and spread the wings a bit a pull the lever straight off. Then the boot comes off. It doesn't appear that removing it from the tranny would help.
