Need some help. Trying to get my Mom's tractor running. Bought a replacement reman starter as the old one seemed bad. (Still think it was bad. Solenoid was clicking but starter was not engaging.)

Have wired the starter as attached (as well as trying other hookups). Getting power to the switch...lights on dash and headlights come on. Getting nothing from the solenoid or starter.

Have cleaned/replaced all the connectors to the battery and had the battery checked at the local auto parts store and it is good.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thx.

Check the chasis ground and the battery terminals/cable connections and the cables themselves. A clicking solenoid usually means a corroded battery terminal or cable connector. To get current to energize the solenoid usually requires the neutral safety switch and, if used, the seat switch to be closed before the solenoid can be energized.

one more test is to get another vehicle using good jumper cables with tractor in NEUTRAL PLEASE hook to feed vehicle ground the neg cable to starter and touch pos cable to bottom post of solenoid it if spins you most surely have wiring problem what this allow you to do is by pass solenoid the post on bottom of solenoid is direct to fieldd coils and should make starter spin please repost

A possible problem I see from your picture is that the lower wire on the solenoid should be on the upper solenoid post. This would explain why you have power to dash, but none to solenoid. The lower post is energized only when the solenoid is activated.

G'day I'm not sure but i think you have a safety switch on the clutch ( up on the pedal) are you trying to start with the clutch down? Are you getting power to the white/red wire when you try to crank?

I agree with Tractor Tech, and it looks like all three wires visible in your pic should go on the top lug. Where's the wire to activate the solenoid, then? And the top wire with the extension lug looks dangerously close to a steel pipe or bar against the block - dead short is possible?
Is this the way the starter was wired before you replaced it?
