New Holland TC40D
Hey Guys, newbie to the forum with a question....

Purchased a low hour New Holland TC40D with a Hydrostatic drive, having an issue with the travel control not returning to neutral when the pedals are released. I need to manually bump the reverse pedal slightly after forward motion and bump the forward pedal slightly after reverse motion to get to nuetral. The linkage appears to return to neutral mechanically so suspect a valve issue may be the culprit. Anybody have a similar issue?

I would first check to see if there is any grease fittings on the pedal unit. One of the problems with compacts is that they do not get used much. So if it has been sitting the grease might have hardened and is resisting the return to neutral. You could also try working the pedals a little with the tractor off to see it it will "break in".

I have the same problem with my TC35D. There is a concentric bolt/cam adjustment on the linkage that's part of the adjustment. You can mark the position of the cam with a magic marker and then work in small increments from there. The roller also gets sticky on the ramp and needs to be cleaned. My NH service guy said that they jack up the entire tractor off the ground when making adjustments. I've been completely unsuccessful in getting mine right. As soon as work slows down I'm going to take the tractor in and have it done.

What Sportsman wrote as I have had the same issue with my TC30 . Sometimes it sits for weeks without use and it will hang like you describe . Seems like after a 1/2 hour to 1 hour use with operating temp getting to normal , it gets a lot better to the point that it works normal .

GB, there is a spring that aids your pedal return to neutral. There is nothing in the transmission that is the problem, but might be the bearing that rolls against the big "B" shaped plate (like a B laying on its side). You might also have a cruise control magnet that is out of alignment and dragging on the back side of the B-plate. You also have a damper assy that might be causing problem. The good thing is everything in under the right side operator platform and you don't need the engine going to get under there, work the pedals, lube stuff up, or adjust the return spring. Just watch how everything works as you move the pedals and you will soon understand how it all works together. I also think there is one grease fitting on the pedal pivot.

You also want to keep your engine rpm above 2000 when operating. If you are new to HSTs, you may be operating at too low an rpm. You may also be using the pedal like a gas pedal. It is not. When you press down, you are shifting to a higher gear. Less pedal movement gives you more power. It takes some getting used to.

BTW: This may help. Here is an illustration of all the pedal components.

Great stuff guys, will check it out tomorrow. Engine speed doesn't seem to play into it much but recall seeing drag marks on the cruise control magnet. Will start with a quick cleaning to expose all the components. Will update after review, thanks.

Well...it would seem the weld securing the travel control pivot shaft has broken where it connects to the transmission valve shaft. Must have been cracked enough to still allow function to a degree, finally pulled apart. Looks like an interesting job to pull the floor for access...:(

Check out this thread from 2002. This problem has been around a long time on early tractors. BTW: In general, such a specific question about a specific tractor does not belong in the general forums. This is very specific to New Holland and would best be suited for the New Holland Owning/Operating forum.
