My New Holland TC40DA starts fine until you work it hard and the temp gauge is about 3/4 to the hot side and then the starter wont turn over just makes a single click until motor cools down and then it starts. Does the starter have thermal overloads?

Sounds like what a starter does when the bushings are sloppy and the armature gets too close to or drags on the fields. How many hours, and what kind of service did it see? You could try to isolate the starter temporarily with a little hd aluminum foil loosely between it and the block see if that changes anything.

My tractor does the same thing from time-to-time. I think the solenoid is not fully pulling in to engage the contacts so the starter motor runs. When it happens to me, I tap on the starter with an adjustable wrench and it seems to cause it to break free and operate. I would work on the starter or replace it, but it only happens once in a blue moon and I have a method that works. If you ever replace the starter, don't just go to a NH dealer and pay the price. Rebuilt and new starters are available on the web for less than $200. I think NH wants twice that amount. Messicks.com sells a NH starter for $628 and they also sell a replacement like the one below for $177. A rebuilt thru them is a little over $300 and you get a $51 core refund.

Here's another source.
