Dextron added to diesel fuel will help lube and clean the injection pump, injectors & valve guides better than any high priced fuel additive you can by off the shelf.
Would like to add my $.02-
In the "old days", ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) was an excellent fuel additive, but I definitely DO NOT recommend putting it in your fuel today. Because of overdrive transmissions, the makeup of ATF has changed dramatically. Friction modifiers are added, along with other ingredients that are not designed to be "burned" in a fuel system. In addition some o rings can be damaged by long term use of ATF; (not compatable).
Refiners of ATF are not required to remove soot, and ash, which are big enemies of diesel engines, and naturally occur in dino oils.
There is some good reading on a couple of sites I have visited, that has opened my eyes about this subject.
Bob Is The Oil Guy: Viewing list of forums has excellent info, just do a search.
If you feel you have to add something in your fuel, some companies are making excellent additives that are designed to be in a fuel system.
Power Serve, and Lucas, are brands that I prefer. (No affiliation with either, just mho).
In a related issue, the new Ultra low sulphur diesel is a drier diesel that some older engines aren't setup for. ULSD will run in older units, with no problems, according to EPA, and engine manufacturers, they are not the ones footing the bill when an injector system fails because of lack of sufficient lubrication. Sulphur naturally occurs in crude oil, and while it is a lubricant in diesel, it is a pollution monster (according to EPA).
If there is any doubt, I would speak to a qualified mechanic, or engine manufacturer rep. about this.
EPA does not require the sulphur to be removed from the dyed diesel (for now), but if you are like me, once in a while I have to put ULSD in my off road equipment. When this happens, I ALWAYS add a fuel additive, or 2 stroke oil, or both, just to be safe.
Sorry for the long post.
