Machines with flail conditioners are less problematic in light, thin crop beecause airflow under the shielding is with the direction of crop flow, not against it. Roll conditioners act just like a gear pump and push air forward.

Very true RickB. If there is not enough material coming off the cutters, it can blow it right out and down, or even blow the crop down so that it does not cut.

Yup my flail discbine has no trouble so far. I shudder at the thought of going back to a sickle machine.

I just bought a Kuhn, disc mower/conditioner with the flail, finger type steel conditioners. It's an older model - the newer machines have the HDPE "V" style flail conditioners.

After working on the neighbor's NH moco with the disc mower cutter bar and rubber/urethane roller conditioner's - I wanted the flail type!

When you jam those roller's with grass-hay... it's enough to make the Pope swear!
