Greeting all! I just became the proud new owner of my first JD, an X304. It's a 2009, 42" deck w/mulching kit installed, came with the bagging system, only 200 hrs and the best part is what I paid. $1850!!

So, my first question is about the tranny. Tractordata.com shows a K58 for that year but the owner's manual shows it's a K46? Can anyone help me to figure out exactly which one I have?

Thanks!

I'm not an expert on the X304- but I believe JD went to K46 in 304 in 2011- so 2009 should have k58

May have been a change, and will need your serial number to see when. Go to jdparts.com and see if you can decipher the change (if indeed there was one).
And wouldn't be the first time that the owner's manual was wrong. Could be tractordata is wrong too.

You should have some identifying no's on your tranny as well.

:welcome: to TBN

Well, if I'm reading it right, (label on front right side of the frame) SN is 123205? Am I looking at the right label?

Below 85,001 you would have a k58, above that and you have a k46.

My advice to you (especially since you don’t know history of tractor) is to take transaxle out – replace dino oil with 5w50 full synthetic. If you have some mechanical ability not a difficult job and can do it in one afternoon – tons of video on how to change it on this and other sites. Once you get oil changed it will give you peace of mind for next 4 or 5 years
