Ok, I finally ordered a chipper from Affordable. Shoulb be here in a week or so. I also ordered spare knuckles and feed shaft as spares as well as a spare set of blades.

From what I have read so far, I will replace the zerts, the feed drive belt, check and double check every bolt and nut.

Now is there anything else I should be aware of putting the chipper together? Is there any mods that I should do to it now that will improve operation or performance ?

I have already aquired good hearing protection and safety shield for up to 3 people.

I will also use the recommended procedure of a base to support the unit so that the chipper pto shaft is between 0 and 15 deg.

Is there anything I missed ?

Thanks in advance

Peter

Peter, welcome to TBN. Good luck with your chipper. What kind of tractor will you be using it on?

Do a search on Jimna Chippers if you haven't already.
Some folks have had problems, some not.
Most of what I've read is you do want to check all bolt and other fasteners for correct tightness.

From what I've read, Affordable does a pretty good of setting up their units but a little check never hurt anything. I only had to replace the zirks on the pillow blocks at the main pulley on mine as the rest had already been changed on mine.

Do check the gap on the cutting blades and bed plate, and welcome to TBN.

I've read the thread on Stop the Burn and there were several mentions of making a mod that would allow foot operated feed release. What I have not found was either a description or pictures of this mod.

Can anyone describe this mod or steer me in the right direction as to this mod ?

Thanks

If you weld you can try what one fellow said he did. I can't remember where I read it, but he cut off the feed roller handle and rewelded it on the underside. Sounds good to me, but I like having the handle there to grab by hand, if needed. I attached a picture (PIC 1) to try and illustrate what it would look like.
My plan is to add a foot pedal to mine as shown in PIC 2. When I get it done, I'll post pics and let you know how it works. I think this one can be done even if you don't weld. It can be built by a welder and then bolted on.
By the way the pics also show the dolly that I built for mine. Don't remember if that was posted to the "Stop the burn" thread.

Thanks for the pictures. I'm having a problem visualizing the setup for pic 2 at this time, but once I have the chipper here, it may become clearer.

I like your stand for it. One question though, how is the support arm supporting the chute assembly. Is there a cross arm on top ?

Can you post some pictures of the support stand. I am intrested in building one myself.

And yes, I have both a head stone and mig welder, so fabing won't be an issue.

I'll post some pics of my dolly for you Drafthorse.
The support is a "T" that fits into a receiver slot on the dolly. The chipper feed tray sits on the top of the "T" .
I made it removeable for storage purposes and it allows me to use the dolly for other things. It also makes it easier to set the chipper onto the dolly using the 3PH.

In PIC 2 all I am going to do is to extend one side of the feed roller handle downward and attach a foot pedal at the bottom. It will look like an elongated "L"

Peter, The chipper is one of the best implements I have ever bought. Before you go changing out everything use it first. I have about 25 hrs of actual use on mine with no problems other than the need to change zircs.

It's kinda funny though. I bought mine to make compost and mulch instead of burning. They say eastern red cedar is good for mulch due to it's bug repelant properties but I had some fire ants take up residence in a freshly cut pile of it.

Ask me how I found out.

Good luck with it.

Other than the zerts and the feed belt, I'm not going to be changing anything else out right now. I ordered the extra parts in event something does go, I can change it out and then order replacement parts later. (old Boy Scout, be prepared).

I've got about 6 acres of Mesquite that I need to remove for pasture. Anything over 4" will be cut for firewood. Most of the chips will be spread and used in stabilizing the sandy soil and as a natural fetilizer.

I will definitly be saving some of the chips for use in my smoker.

Ductape, It was kinda a tongue in check expression.

Being from NH you might not know much about fire ants. They're swarming little devils that attack swiftly. I stuck my arms into the pile to spread it by hand and was covered by the varmints.

Here are the pictures.
Pic 3 shows the T-Bar clearly. It is made from 1" square tubing. The sleeve, hard to see, is a 3" piece of 1 1/4" square tubing.
Pic 4 just shows the 400# steel casters.
