New John Deere - X580 or X584 or X590

We're looking at purchasing a John Deere X580 or X584 or X590 w/ a 54" deck for my folks place. Will be used for cutting ~4 acres of grass & pulling a small trailer w/ my pop's lawn tools & to pick up sticks. Any of these better than the other, pros/cons of any of them? Is the 4 wheel steering on the 584 any good or just one more thing that can break? Thanks!

The 4 wheel steer is real nice if you have the use for it. You should at least test drive one. As far as repairs, I've not ever had to do anything but grease the u joints on the 4WS.

For sure I'd vote for the AWS.. after years of owning them and find my initial concerns about "failure" were unfounded. They are as bullet-proof as the front wheel steers.
And AWS much faster at mowing lawn, being able to get around quicker with tighter turns, and backing up a trailer or to just turn at the lawns' ends is much easier. Also, any side hill mowing is easier with the AWS. My 2 cents...

No complaints on my x580 with 50hrs on it. Compared to anything I have ever had the power steering turns sharp and fast. Only had box store mowers before it.

I'll +1 giving AWS a look. Just got an x394 after using a JD Spin Steer (SST18) for years. The all wheel steer gives me pretty much the same maneuverability (short of the SST18 "spin in place") but without doing damage to the turf the way the SST18 did when scrubbing a tire during a tight turn. The combo of wide rear wheel stance & all wheel steer makes for an easier time working across a slope.

I had an older riding mower that was 4 wheel steer (it wasn't power steering) and it was nice but I really wasn't useful for me. If you have lots of things like trees to mow around the I could see a use for it. For mostly straight line mowing, not so much. I personally like the x590 with fuel injection. Just turn the key and it starts no matter the temperature. My x500 starts easy enough by pushing on the choke and letting off the moment it actually starts but until it warms up the engine clearly isn't running as well as it could. I usually start it then let it warm up for a minute or two. With EFI just start it and give it enough time for the oil to move around then you're ready to go. There's a reason why no cars sold today come with a carb.

My x584 is awesome around my trees and serpentine edges and tight turns. If you have these in your area, an AWS is the way to go! The AWS, power steering, and power deck lift are rock-solid.

If you don't have those in your mowing area, then either the x580 or x590 would be great. If you'll be using the unit for snow blowing/plowing, then the EFI on the x590 will make cold-starting the engine easier.

At least you have the choice of which X5 model you want. Here in the great 'enlightened' state of Ca we only have the X570 available. No C.A.R.B. certified versions of the X580 (would have been my choice), X584, or X590. No gasoline X700 series either. Just the X750 and X758 diesels.

The X700 series are out of my price range...........but I still don't like being told I can't get 'em. A fellow Ca resident suggested visiting Oregon or Nevada for an 'illegal' yard/garden tractor purpose.... "West (or South) bound and down, loaded up and truckin..."
