Hi folks, I'm about to buy a Kubota MX5001 with heavy duty bucket loader, 3 remotes, cat I/II 3 pt hitch. When i buy I can include any new Landpride attachments in 60 mos. / 0% financing. Can you help me figure out which of the following I might want to buy new from Landpride, and which I shouldn't (for example if the landpride version isn't good or is overpriced, or if an old beater off Craigslist would do the job just as well)?

The things I need to do are all things I'm having to hire done right now, so none of this stuff will be sitting around.

I'm establishing 10 acres of sheep pasture now with potential of another 70 acres in a few years. I need to primary seed and overseed with a grass drill seeder including small seeds. I need to maintain the pasture at 8-10" max and I'd prefer a flail mower over a bush hog for that (to handle thick weeds when ive been lazy, give a decent finish and mulch). Sometimes I need to disk to prepare a bed for an annual forage.

I have a lot of post holes to dig and I don't want to rent a skid steer at $350 a day ever again!

I need to chip and/or shred duff and branch fall from the woods to mulch the fruit trees and herbs - that's going to be a regular ongoing job.

I have a $10k max budget for attachments, and I don't intend to buy all this new, just looking for feedback on which are good to buy new, and also if I'm looking at the right models of each

So these are the attachments I'm looking at:

FM41 flail mower
Seeder-not sure which. APS15 series? Or can the PSN20 overseed?
PD25 post hole digger or HD25?
DH25 disk harrow (or should I consider a cultivator instead
WC15 wood chipper

Sorry this is so long. Your feedback is much appreciated!

ps what is a Top n tilt for?

Catherine, I will give you advice on things that I know about. Top and tilt is mainly used for grading purposes. Most commonly with a box blade. (see pictures) Would run $650 for your tractor.

A PD25 is more than adequate for your tractor and I believe less money than the HD25. But depending on your ground conditions and your experience, you may be best of with the HD25 unit. If you have a lot of roots, is where I would think that the HD unit would be most useful. (able to reverse the auger to get it unstuck) Another part of any 3pt post hole auger that most people don't think about is a hydraulic down pressure kit. This can be used with either unit and can be a HUGE HUGE time saver. The down pressure kit on my PD35 has literally saved me days of time spent drilling holes. :cool2:

As far as a disk, I have had very good results with all of my pull disks, but depending on your conditions, it may very well be to your advantage to use a 3pt disk. Sort of something that you really can't tell without seeing and of course best to see in person. I honestly can not say if you should get the HD2572 or 96. I almost think that the 96 might be to much for the tractor. I would get the 22" notched blades with the scraper option. Nice to not have to worry so much about the blades loading up.

All of this stuff can be found used for a lot less than what will cost new. The question is how good will it be, and how long of a wait to find it? :confused3: Land Pride makes some good implements, I have a couple of them. They do typically cost more than some of the other brands, but then when it comes to NEW implements, you normally get what you pay for.

Good luck ;)

For the post hole digger I would definitely consider a down pressure kit for it for the reasons Brian already stated.

Instead of a chipper you could get a grapple. The mulch from a chipper is not very good. You could pile the brush somewhere and burn it or you could haul it off if you have a way. You will need a 3rd function on your loader to run a grapple. I have a Everything Attachments Wicked Grapple.

Catherine,
Get the HD auger if you have many holes - it will hold up longer and the ability to reverse the auger and exit a hole is a fantastic option. It is frustrating having to dig out a stuck auger.
I have eleven implements and all are Land Pride except two. Land Pride is well built and three have been with me for over 30 years of use and abuse w/out any failures.
When you purchase a disk harrow or cultivator (I recommend a disk harrow) it is best to get one wider than the rear tire width. If this implement will not be used frequently a used unit in good condition will function well and can save $$.
Chipper/shredders are quite a bit more $$ than chippers alone. Again a good clean used unit will save considerable $$. However, do not consider running "duff" thru a chipper - it will just plug and make you angry.
FYI, I've never seen a Land Pride implement that was flimsy or poorly built and I've never seen a cheaply priced Land Pride implement. You will get what you pay for.

WELCOME TO TBN - I know you are going to like your new Kubota, have fun - be safe and good luck.

Folks, this is really helpful feedback. I feel good about the validation of land pride quality, for one thing. I'll definitely go for the down pressure kit for the auger.

Sounds like I don't need top and tilt now and with three remotes I can add aftermarket. I don't need the three remotes now but I plan on this being my lifetime tractor (Ha! I bet a lot of you folks with two tractors said that, right?).

Thanks for telling me not to chip or shred the duff!!! And of course now I see that I OBVIOUSLY NEED that sweet grapple...

Can anyone comment on the flail mower for maintaining pasture at 8-10" versus a bush hog? I'm thinking the finish mower would be a bad idea because those annual weeds can make 1" stalks (soft) when I let them go, and I do sometimes let the grass get way taller than I should. I think the flail mower will mulch it better so it doesn't leave long Matt's on top of the grasses.

Sounds like I don't need top and tilt now and can add aftermarket if / when I do? I'd like to be able to level my mile-long shell drive but not often enough not to ask our lease farmer.

Sounds about right, you can go OEM later or buy from aftermarket like Fit-Rite (MtnViewRanch), Michigan Iron Works, Haytools or others and decide if you want check valves or not.

I don't need the three remotes now but I plan on this being my lifetime tractor (good enough and the occasional trade off on hours on the field worth the savings (Ha! I bet a lot of you folks with two tractors said that, right?). Anyway, it sounds like adding them later isn't as pretty and more costly. Ditto the heavy duty bucket. Maybe overkill today but my ambitions seem to grow just a little faster than my capability :)

Agreed, much cheaper to do it now, I would like to have a third set on our M8540, but don't want to transport the tractor and pay to have it put on. We thought two would be plenty three years ago when we bought it, but now own a Land Pride HR3584 and it sure would be handy.

A never ending discussion it seems; I prefer rotary cutter due to the reach to mow over ditches, down pond embankments while others prefer flail, several threads here archived.

Good luck in your shopping.

WillowDale,

Yes, you should be able to fold any new Land Pride implement into your Kubota tractor financing package.
