Howdy all. Name's Keith. Just bought 5 acres here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, about an hour NE of Seattle in the Cascades foothills. Also eyeing an additional 6 across the road. I'm working with a buddy to get my homesite cleared. But I know I'll need some muscle to work on upcoming projects. I've been keeping my eyes open for new and used tractor deals around my area for some time. I'm pretty new to tractor operation, but not entirely a rookie. When I was a kid, my uncle ran 120 acres and used to let me bush-hog on his old Ford (not sure which model, but in looking back through pics I'm thinking it was an old 4000). He also had an IH 766 with what I believe is called the tricycle front end (front tires close together). I was more familiar with the old Ford. He had a FEL and a backhoe for it, too. Never used the FEL but ran the backhoe a few times (if you wanna call it that...haha). Well, with this new land I have, I wanna get a solid all purpose tractor. Been shopping the compacts in my area. I thought it would be a good idea to join this forum and get real advice from experienced, seasoned pros. Looking forward to it!

Never did, and still don't understand the correlation between acreage and tractor size. Where is this scientifically proven data published?

The composition of the land, the terrain, vegetation, forestation , tasks, are relative. I have a sizable propery. Outside of the hay fields which are a cooperative effort for which any compact would be worthless, all of my tasks could easily be handled w/ the small ford.

Point is, not every property requires a major makeover. In fact, many folks purchase a property specifically because they appreciate the improvements performed by previous owner(s).

Many thousands of large parcels in the US Change ownership every year. A handful of new owners expose the property conditions and intended changes to forum critique.

Acreage and tractor size is still an elusive concept, especially when a member w/ two lots in a developed subdivision, extols the experience of managing a large parcel, that in truth, may not require significant management at all. Simple mowing? Occasional rotary cutting, few buckets of mulch, collect a little firewood.?
Garden tilling? Light driveway maintenance? Smaller tractor capable tasks, ALL !
