Hey guys I just purchased a 1968 Ford LCG for $1500 runs and drives pretty good. I think it has the 201 gasser engine question is I live in southern Idaho and weather is extreme from well over 100 to -20 below. I have been running straight 30w in the tractor but when I started it up to plow the snow this last storm it seemed as if the oil was to thick and it knocked for a moment or 2 on start up and starter was having trouble engagin flywheel only happens when very cold outside above 40 no issues at all. Would it be safe to run a split weight 10w30 or 10w40 hours on engine are unknown runs great no smoke starts up nicely when temps are above 40??? Also what type of hydralic fluid or what type of oil do I use in the rear end is this conected to the hydralic system for 3 point ( when its cold the blade will barely move up and down at temps below 20)

Hi. Welcome. Congrats on the tractor.

You can run the multi grade oils. the 10w means it will flow like 10 weight but is still a 30 weight oil.
Synthetics work great in the cold. In the hydraulics too.
I engage the PTO during warm up to help warm the hyd. oil faster.

awesome great advice never thought of engaging the pto to help warm her up. I will switch out the old hydro fluid to a synthetic but will that interfear with the wet shoe brake system??? My new Holland dealer doesnt have any info on the old girl because it is an industrial model and they are an AG dealer only so i am forced to search out info on the internet. !!!

Synthetic will work fine for the brakes. May improve them too. I think you will be happy with the synthetic.

I thought about running 5w40 that is what I have on hand due to my truck using that grade. I am a little Leary about running a synthetic in an older motor i believe they are a much higher detergent oil. I am going to switch from a straight weight to multi-grade but stay clear of synthetics soon as it warms up I will go back to a straight weight for summer. If it was a fresh motor I totally would switch to synthetic but I have no clue about the history of this old girl.

That 68 should be fine on a syn oil.

Keeping a straight weight oil in her is a tad brutal :)
