Greetings,

I'm a new member and don't even own a tractor yet. My wife and I moved to northwest Arkansas from Dallas (I assigned myself here for two years to focus on some work projects I'm doing). The longer we live here, though, the more we feel we may want to invest, find our acreage and start developing our retirement homestead.

So, found the acreage (5 acres). Working on purchasing it now. In the mountains. The location is slightly sloped but is fully cleared and perfectly clean. Owner used it only for growing, baling hay. Has a beautiful mountaintop view of the University of Arkansas, the Ozarks and Fayetteville.

So, I need a tractor. Five acres with mostly light work involved.

I know nothing. Grew up on a farm but have been a lifelong educator so my knowledge of tractors isn't just limited.....it's nonexistent.

I plan to use it to grade a long driveway, cut 4 acres of hay annually, store it. Maybe even do some terrace work and build a small tank (pond)? Build a fence around the property. Basically, light work. So, attachments for cutting, grading, maybe a trailer, shovel(?), hydraulic.

So, I'm going to be researching and trying to gain whatever I can from the advice I find here. I'll post but not even sure what to post since I'm starting at zero.

My first and most important question is - what size, what models, what attachments, etc? Sorry for my ignorance but I'm a fast learner, hard worker and good researcher. So, I appreciate being able to interact and look forward to learning all I need to know on here. Believe me, I'll take any advice I can get.

West Fork is a beautiful Area. Hm... lots to learn, but we need to learn more from you. You intend to cut/rake/ bale hay? This usually involves larger tractors in the UT or Utility Tractor area, so more like 50 horse and up, instead of CUT tractors. Not that there arent some small balers around, but I think you will find all of this hay making a very expensive proposition for 4 acres.. Much better to hire it done, and even then finding someone to do 4 acres... I dunno. Small pond?.. Possible, doable, but tedious, depending on the soil there. If it is mostly dirt with some light rocks, Ok. a CUT (Compact Utility Tractor)can do it but it will take a while. to do with a FEL (Front End Loader) and box blade might be handy too. You are going to want at least 30 horsepower and a FEL loader as a minimum I think. You can see what I have, it is in the 35 horsepower class with FEL, Pallet Forks, and a Grapple. I have a scrape blade (also known as an angle blade) and a rotary cutter (AKA rough cutter, AKA bush hog, brush hog etc). I Have a Kioti brand and like it very well,, it is the "other orange" tractor, with Kubota being the more famous orange brand. I have owned 2 Kubotas, 1 New Holland, and 1 Long previously. I favor tractors with Hydrostatic drive, especially for inexperienced operators, for older operators, with questionable knees (like me), and for doing precision loader work. Others may/will disagree, everyone is welcome to their opinion. So there are my initial thoughts, read some more, and come back and post some more questions, and we will try our best to answer them. I live up in Branson, but I used to work in Arkansas.

Thanks for the welcome....and the information. Getting a lot from here and the second post I placed last evening. Pretty much seeing any hay work being hired out. Not going to have but a couple of cows so don't need much but probably best to hire out annually. I know my workload will be light on a small 4 acres but would rather have the tractor with much more capabilities than a large mower. Thanks again for the welcome. I'm posting my questions and other information on the other forum just to make sure I do his correctly. And thanks, James. I appreciate the information. I'll use it.
