Hello everyone, I have been hooked on this website for approximately 3 years now. I just became a new member today and this is my first post. I am amazed with the members knowledge from this site everytime I check it out. I do have a question that I cannot find the answer to even though I have searched. I have a leak in the fuel tank of my 1401 Yanmar. I know the dash and hood has to be removed. I have looked under the hood with my inspection camera and with flashlights. Before I begin, I was wondering if someone with experience with doing this has some pointers. Im not sure If i have to disconnect the dash, or even pull the steering wheel off to get to the tank. From what I have read, the steering wheel can be difficult to remove, but im more concerned with the proper way to take the hood, or i guess the cowling off. Thanks for all you knowledge in advance.

Winston I am not sure where the leak would be until I get to the fuel tank. I know it isn't where the fuel line attaches, but the tank drained about to where it's 1/4 full. It stopped leaking at that point. When I bought the tractor I could only fill it 3/4 of the way up or it leaked. Now its to the point I will have to patch it or replace.

If it turns out you must patch the tank, I have had great luck with JB Weld, a two part epoxy that sticks to most everything. They have 24 hour dry time and quick dry. once you locate the leak, clean the surface with a good de-greaser, maybe acetone, rough the surface with emery cloth then apply the JB Weld. For a few dollars you can solve the problem. Good luck.

Thank you for the good info adjusterr. You already answered what my next question was going to be about sealing the tank. I have read that some people have good luck with that fix, and some people have bad luck. I will sure give it a try after I get the tank out and see how it goes. I'm still curious if anyone else with the YM 1401 has pulled the tank out. The tank is located under part of the hood or cowling. Just wondering if there is a trick taking these parts off. Thanks.

I did exactly what Adjusterr said to the tank on a 1401 many years ago and the repair has held well. It probably depends on how bad the crack/hole/leak is, though.

Good luck and take care.

That is good to hear about the patch holding up. Do you remember if you had to pull the dash or steering wheel to get to the tank rtimgray ? By the way I want to thank everyone for their responses to my questions...
