New Nissan Titan

Looked a one at the Toronto Auto Show. Goose neck prep only. So for fiver owners no go. It has reasonable payload and towing capabilities and is in between the Dodge heavy duties and Ford Super Duties for fuel consumption. The big deal is the Cummins as the Dodge Eco Diesel is not. Interesting to look at though.

I don't quite understand the whole concept of the new Titan. Seems like it has the curb weight of a 3/4 ton, 7K lbs, but has the payload and towing of a 1/2 ton...

Some of the early advertising / preview stuff wasn't very clear. As far as I can tell, there is a "Titan XD" which is comparable to a 3/4 ton pickup from the US brands, in all aspects including empty weight, capacities, engine, etc. There will also be a regular "Titan" which will continue to be a 1/2 ton type pickup. Not sure why they aren't being more clear on this, but then the whole 1/2-ton / 3/4-ton / 1-ton designations are far out of date as well. Perhaps they should simply be called light and medium duty pickups. Not be confused with medium duty truck TRUCKS, which are much bigger than "heavy duty" pickups. Etc.

The idea of the XD, from what I understand (as a Titan owner/driver) is to fill an in between market for those who want a truck larger/more powerful than a 1/2 ton but do not want a dually.

This truck is supposed to fill that gap better than anything else on the market.

It is an in-between truck. It does NOT have the capabilities of a 3/4 ton, when they are pulling 16-17K and the Nissan at 12K. Payloads are OK but not great. Power level will probably make all the 1/2 tons cry, but it's not a half ton either.

When hooked to a 12K trailer, I have no doubts there will be ZERO comparison to ANY 1/2 ton, I don't care what they are rated for or equipped with. That extra heft will really add to stability, and the diesel will take off with a 12K load far better than any half ton. Rightly so, since it IS marketed as an in-between truck.

That, and I am not even a fan of Nissan, never have been. I just give them credit where it's due. Match them pulling any load over 10K for thousands of miles and see who is in the repair shop first. I doubt it will be them. It really is a stand alone truck class, for now. I don't see it as a comparison to the Dodge either. The only similarity, is the fuel. The Dodge is a light to med duty 1/2 ton and the Nissan is a heavy duty 1/2 ton, sort of.

Power numbers are the same as the 2005 Duramax was and it was rated around 14K. No doubt the limiting factor in it's rating was NOT the power train.

That said, if I were to buy a new truck (I won't, can't afford one) for towing, I would still go 3/4HD. If I wasn't going to tow any more, it would be the GM mid size with 2.8 Duramax.
