Well, I just bought a tractor yesterday, and I'm hoping I did the right thing. I got a MF 35 with the perkins deisel. It came with a bush hog loader attached to the machine, a five foot House mower, and a five foot bush hog rototiller. I am planning to use the loader to move and stack large square bales, and I'm sure the mower and tiller will come in handy as well. It needs a bit of tinkering...There is one leaky hose on the loader, and the engine smokes some. I am hoping that a new set of injectors will help the smoking.

A few questions...

How difficult would it be to replace the injectors? I am reasonably good with tools, but do not have any experience with deisel mechanics. Also, is that the likely culprit for some smoke? The fuel filter is relatively new, or so I'm told.

The hydraulics run from a port next to the seat mount. There is a selector valve there that must be moved to select three point lift or loader operation. Is there any way to re-plumb without the selector valve so that I could use both at the same time?

I gave $5000.00 for the package. Did I do OK?

Thanks for any help. I'm sure I'll have more questions as time goes.

I recently replaced the injectors on my 2 MF-35s. Its not a bad job but will take some time.

Replacing the injectors requires removing the fuel tank which is more easily done if the hood is removed (not hard to do). Be careful so as to not damage the fuel pressure and especially fuel return lines.

The Perkins equipped 35 is a nice little tractor but asking it to move big round bales with a FEL is a lot to ask. FELs are hard on the front axle assembly. You will also need rear ballast.

Email me or post back if you need injectors as I have 3 new old stock injectors to fit a late model MF-35 with a Perkins diesel engine. I bought these for mine but they fit only later serial numbers than mine.

My bales will be 3x3x6 squares, and they only weigh in at about 600lbs. My idea is to also build a carrier for the 3ph, and pick a bale up on the back to use as ballast while using the front loader to move and stack other bales. I figure I can select the rear, pick one up, and then select the loader on the valve to use it.

BTW, how do I know if those injectors will fit my application?

Arbo:

I'm at work now but have information at home regarding engine serial numbers as well as injector tags that they will fit. The injectors have aluminum tags with Alpha codes. I cannot remember definitively right now but I believe that the NOS injectors that I have are marked "DB".

If interested, post back with your email address and I will send more comprehensive information.

The MF35s were manufactured from 1960-63. The average used retail price which is the price a dealer would ask for a clean tractor with average hours (less than 5000) ranges from $2100 to $2380. If your tractor is exceptionally clean this would change to $2800 to $3200.

Those three implements together are probably worth more than the tractor, so I'd say you made a darn good deal.

In July 06 I bought a 1964 MF-135 diesel (which replaced the MF35 in 1964) with 4600 hours and sheet metal damage for $3600. It has a few minor leaks (engine oil, tranny fluid seepage at the pto seal) and no smoke.

What color is the smoke? How much smoke? Does it smoke all the time or only on startup/warmup? In June06 I looked at a MF65 but passed on it when I saw blue smoke that didn't clear up after warmup.

Black smoke indicates a possible fuel system problem (injectors?), blue means oil in the combustion chambers (rings?, valves?), white is coolant getting into the chambers (head gasket?).

If it's white, there are $25 test kits that check the coolant system for the presence of combustion products.

I wouldn't tear into the fuel system until you're sure it's causing the problem. If the smoke goes away after warmup, I'd go with it and not bother with opening up the fuel system.
