new polaris 500 ho,for extreme atv family

After researching several machines,and trying out machines from dealers in our area,my wife decided to buy thet limited edition all black POLARIS 500 HO .We have rode our magnums hard for several years,and she was ready to up to an independant suspension.We were looking real hard at the bombardias ,they had one of the best reviews out there,3 year warranty too.The outlander felt small like our MAGNUMS,and the winchs didnt come with a roller fairlead,but our dealer who sells both,told us for the way we ride[which is severe rocky off trailing],the POLARIS independant is still a little better,than bombys,pretty close on regular trails.The bomby 400 outlander was 500 more than the POLARIS 500 HO ,WE GOT the last totally black one around .Each dealer was only issued 2.I dont think im going to be impressed with aluminum rims,but well see.We outfitted it with 2 fancy black bumpers.
iVE gotta figure out how to hook our seat on the back,the rack is different,and get some footpegs.Yes we haul our kids,dont call the safety police,weve been doing it since our youngest was 3,we know what were doing,they walk when the going gets tough.The kids ride by themselfs on the magnums under close supervision,on our own land.They are very responsible,and are very skilled riders learning alot from us over the years.Soon the oldest will be driving her own MAGNUM,got to get her a safety course so she can show the instructer proper safety techniques /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Two more payments and im ready to start saving for another,gonna check POLARIS[which has been bullet proof for us ] bombys ,and YAMAHAS.Storage is important for me,when we go im the pack mulE.We dont take peanut butter and jelly,we take the coleman stove frypans coolers. Have you ever had fresh coffee 20 miles in the back woods from a mountain stream now thats cool!!!!,the food is as great as the 4 wheeling.Ill get you folks some pics when i pick it up next week.

I have a 500 HO DUSE that doesn't get much riding time /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That coffee made from water from a mountain stream would taste a lot better if you hiked in and out on foot, as I have often done, but age and injuries keep me from doing any longer. Enjoy the time that you spend in the back country.

Here it is,finally picked it up.What a sweet little machine it is.Made them take off the red bumpers and go black.Gonna get her a plate that says:BACK IN BLACK,orBLACK - - - - -
Needless to say my 325 magnum is going to get dusted on them open trails just gotta remember its paid for,hers aint /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just bought a 400 sportsman with on damand all wheel drive. I have never owned an automatic before and it takes some getting use to for me. I find myself wanting to change gears. I do like the independent rear suspension. I don't know about these autos. my 1 st . I sure hope it holds up.

Ill bet im not the first to tell you,the autos are bullet proof.It is the same type cyntrificle clutch system as a snowmobile[any brand]thus the faster the engin turns the more it opens up and allows the belts to move to the smaller part,instead of the outside.On an atv a gear box gives you a high and low range.If you are traveling over slow going areas,or need power,the changing of gears is needed to keep the belt down in the pulley so its grabbing good.On my MAGNUMS i shift down,when im in areas that require speeds under 20 mph for any reasonable distance.I also use low gear when i need horse power,for pulling a tree,going up a steep grade,or even loading on a trailer.There is no need for low if the traveling gets bad,and your on a downhill cant,other than real steep if you keep the belt engaged to hold you back.Now a mud hole thats a different story.The trouble i find with the smaller horsepower machines is low gear doesnt give you speed enough for momentem,The engin doest have the power to get you through in high,and it bogs down.With your 400,and my wifes 500 you probably can tackle them in high,with ease,
Now that i told you this ,dont panick about what gear your in.LIke i said them clutchs are bullet proof on an atv.I had a friend ,who was so slack she never shifted and ran her KAWASAKI in high all the time.AFTER three years the only problem she had was the belt sqeaked on take off,thus she glazed it over from allowing it to run on the outside of the clutch,at low ground speeds where it wasnt grabbing good.If you make a half of an attempt to drive it right the belt on an atv will last the lifetime of a machine.THATS WHY polaris gives you a limited lifetime warrenty on the belt...limited to if you dont treat it right they aint replacing it.UNless your using your atv to pull out stuck trailer trucks ,you aint putting half the stresses on these clutchs as a snowmobile,On a sled your driving a very long frozen stiff rubber track.it usually has no low gear so if your going slow your belts dieing fast.If you play in 3 ft of powder like i do,your track is packed inside with snow,and them belts glaze over fast.Your doing 0 to 50 in seconds causing great stress on the belt,and clutchs.This is why us snowmobilers go through so many belts.This is non existing with an atv.
I reccommend once a year ,take off the cover,and blow out the clutchs,its easy.Under no cicrcumstances do you ever oil a clutch component. Check the belts lool good and the sheaves are clean and your good to go.
Shifting stinks unless you ride open endless open areas,so ill stay with the autos[the ones with belts only] Have fun with it and stop thinking its gonna bust...it aint.

rode around the house thats probably it til spring ITS cold up here and the snows flying,so are thoughts are on snowmobiling.Most of the trails are closed for the season and we got some new strict laws,about that sort of stuff.We got the extendend warrenty so we are all set there.
