Having lived at my current house for 8 years I finally was able to build a new shop/storage building, having outgrown the 2 car garage years ago. My plan was for a 40x54 but the county said that put me over my max square feet for an accessory building so we settled in 40x53.
After talking with my neighbors I decided to use slab in grade construction with a 14肺14 thickened edge, with the posts secured to the slab. The local farmers told me that the new treated lumber will rot in the ground after 15-20 years and I know several who have had to jack their barns up and pour footings, not something I would ever want to do.
It痴 great to have friendly neighbors with big machinery!!
The following picture is my neighbor entering the yard to start the grading work. Took him about 4.5 hours total to level the site in preparation for the concrete.

We discovered a natural deposit of gravel in the hill he was leveling off to build on, it was about 4 foot higher on the northwest corner than the southeast. We dug all the gravel out next to the pad and filled it back with clay.

These are pictures of and from in the hole, kind of hard to tell but it was a good 8 deep and 20 long, I didn稚 have to haul any gravel in for the base.
We did have to take down a couple of maple trees
The concrete got done eventually but it pushed me back later into the fall than I had wanted
More to come.
