Having lived at my current house for 8 years I finally was able to build a new shop/storage building, having outgrown the 2 car garage years ago. My plan was for a 40x54 but the county said that put me over my max square feet for an accessory building so we settled in 40x53.

After talking with my neighbors I decided to use slab in grade construction with a 14肺14 thickened edge, with the posts secured to the slab. The local farmers told me that the new treated lumber will rot in the ground after 15-20 years and I know several who have had to jack their barns up and pour footings, not something I would ever want to do.

It痴 great to have friendly neighbors with big machinery!!
The following picture is my neighbor entering the yard to start the grading work. Took him about 4.5 hours total to level the site in preparation for the concrete.

We discovered a natural deposit of gravel in the hill he was leveling off to build on, it was about 4 foot higher on the northwest corner than the southeast. We dug all the gravel out next to the pad and filled it back with clay.

These are pictures of and from in the hole, kind of hard to tell but it was a good 8 deep and 20 long, I didn稚 have to haul any gravel in for the base.

We did have to take down a couple of maple trees

The concrete got done eventually but it pushed me back later into the fall than I had wanted

More to come.

So did I mention how great it is to have good neighbors? Well I was able to borrow a telehandler for most of the construction. I did this entire project myself except for the grading work and the concrete, so this build thread is about to go downhill.

So above we see the poles being set, that went fairly smooth, not easy to do by yourself. I fastened the brackets down all the way around first, then I drove in stakes out in the yard and attached long 2x4痴. Then it got sporty! I would set everything up at the base, then set the bottom of the pole into the base and raise it up by hand, check it for plum and nail a brace into it with the air nailer. My dad was there to 塗elp but having had both knees replaced was only able to hand me tools. The side poles (15? weren稚 too bad, by the time I got to the ends I was smart enough to use the telehandler to hold them up.

Then I secured all the girts around the east, south, and west wall. I only put girts half way up the north wall because I had a plan to set the trusses with the telehandler from the north side. These were 40 trusses.

It didn稚 go well

So, as you can see that is a telehandler laying on its side. I had lined up help for 1 day to get the trusses set. I got in a hurry, backed up too fast with the boom all the way up on a hill and OVER I went. It seemed to tile slowly in my mind but the witnesses said it happened fast. Always wear a seatbelt (I wasn稚 but got lucky) and be safer than me. The telehandler was not damaged in the rollover. That was the good news. I hired a 菟rofessional towing company to right it ($1500 for the off-road recovery). They managed to break a steering tie rod and blow out one of the tires. This set me back a few weeks because now instead of working on the pole barn I had to fix the telehandler. I fixed it too as before condition and my neighbor still let me use afterwards. He was very understanding and glad no one was hurt. Again, the telehandler was completely repaired.

Well eventually work continued on the barn

I went with a 16wide by 10 foot tall overhead door, and a sliding 20wide x 15’tall slider door. All doors except the service entrance on the front as seen. After the telehandler incident, I decided to set the trusses from inside the barn on level concrete, this went much better. I wasn’t going to do the initially because I was worried the telehandler would weigh too much on the new concrete. I learned my lesson. I also got a 40’ boom lift to finish up the roof perlins and put the tin on from. I went with clear panels at the top of both side walls, 3’ panels down both sides. This building will not be heated, I use a torpedo heater facing my work area when needed.

The panels let in a lot of light!

I have been working on the barn for about a year, I started the ground work around last september, had it mostly finished by early spring and yet I still have a few pieces of trim to finish.

South eastern Wisconsin. I will try and edit my profile.

So I put a driveway in this summer, 2 loads of 3 inch rock for a base, two loads of 3/4- road gravel on top, all spread with my NEW TRACTOR!!

I bought a LS Mt2 25 hydro drive, I really have enjoyed having it.

Overall, it looks like you did a very good job. You got really lucky when the machine rolled over. Glad you didn't get hurt.

You have some really good neighbors. I'd of been in a panic if I had damaged somebody else's equipment, but I'm impressed how you handled it and made it all good again. I have a neighbor that has borrowed things from me, and every time, it comes back better then when he got it. I kind of wish he would borrow more stuff!!!!

I figure I should at least add a picture of the new tractor. I went with the LS, there is a dealer near me and other than an odd ball fuel pump failure (which really upset me at the time) it has been great. The only attachments I got were a 5’ box blade and a set of forks. I really want a grapple, but I also really want a 2 post lift for the shop.
