Well,I finally got my new R-1 tires and rims today (all 4 tires were filled ) just got them on a little while ago,I spent all evening wrestling them around. It looks like a new and different tractor, the tires make it set so much higher.I should have insisted on the r-1 tires when I bought the tractor, anyway I will be able to get around a little better now.

Hillbilly, did you end up getting any sort of return credit or price concession?

Not yet anyway. The tires were 14 months old,the salesman was on vacation when I picked them up,they asked me at the counter if I had already paid for them,(like the billing was still open)the salesman told me we would work something out, especially since I spent even more money and bought wheel weights for the r-4(later on).So I will get back with him next week, maybe I can get him to work a good deal on a Woods box blade.

Hey, Hillbilly, Did you get the 7-14's or the 7-16's 6-plys (front) ? And on the back did you get the 11.2-24s(4-plys) or the 12.24 (6-plys)? Also, what kind of clearance do you have between the tires and the fender on the rear? Will a you be able to put chains on the rear? Was told by the dealer that i would not be able to use a MMM with the ag tires on the front. Really appreciate your input, and thanks again.......mark ........ Im listening.......Oh yeah! do you have the wheels turned out all the way?

I have the 7-16 6ply and the 12.24 6ply.The least fender clearance is between is just a little over 1 1/4" . I have the wheels turned out the second setting (saying 1 is the most narrow)the rear tires are about 1/2 way under the outer edge of the fenders.I knew going into this about tires chains and clearance,I opted for the larger r-1 tires because it really sets the tractor up high and changed the profile of the machine dramatically. They say not to run tire chains on the front,I am really not sure why,but it looks to me with the 7-16 ,r-1 you would be able to.I already notice with the new tires it carrys the rotatry cutter higher of the ground, because of the added height. For my use it fits the bill, the best move I could have made as far as the tractor tires go.

Hey Hillbilly, thanks for the response. When you say you "have the wheels turned out to the to the second setting (saying 1 is the most narrow) does that mean you can place them out further? If so, would that mean there would be more room for chains? An 1 1/2" doesnt seem like enough room for chains ( on the rear) I will need to get these wheels out as far as possible for better stance and stability. Did these new tires/wheels make your tractor more top heavy? Ive ordered these same tires/wheels for my tractor(which was to be set-up and delivered over a week ago) and am curious as to the center of gravity. Can you post any pics? thanks again.....im listening...........mark

Sorry I can"t post any pictures yet,I took a picture of my wife and the camera broke(just kidding),I have not set the wheels out all of the way,I think there is a spacer you can order too(I think) that goes between the wheel and the hub,I can only speculate but I say there is a good chance you could get the wheels out far enough to possibly clear the fenders. If you are getting the same tires maybe you can experiment and find out,I was running out of daylight yesterday and just wanted to get the things mounted!!! Darn heavy rascals when they are filled, but I succeeded in getting the job down.I do not think it will make the tractor too top heavy, where I live it is very hilly,I feel pretty confident on my tractor, but I always wear that seat belt.

I finally got to run the JD 4400 with the new R-1 ags and rims. It is like a new machine, better traction and height,I do not have to run it in 4wd near as much.I think this thing would climb a tree if you could hang on to it.

Hey Hillbilly, Whats this about a spacer? Does JD make and sell such a thing? Im glad your happy with your new wheels. You didnt sound very happy with the r-4s. Really anxious about my new tractor. It was suppossed to be set up and delivered by now. My wife stopped a couple of times week before last to see how it was comming along but the salesman we've been dealing with has been too busy to talk with her(usually out somewhere) She has found out that he was charging us for protective chains on the rotary cutter, and the cutting edge on the heavy duty bucket(for the FEL)But there is one that comes with the extra armor kit. Both items are standard! Last we heard was that they were waiting for the tires and rims (which was week before last) Not a peep since. Many times thru this whole process weve heard the term "we'll make things right for you"! from him. Wondering if I picked the right dealer? OOPS Im sorry Hillbilly If I got off the subject.( was that out loud LOL?) But if you or any one else out there knows any thing more about these wheel spacers, Id like to hear about them. sorry bout venting on your post.....Im listeng....mark

Vent all you want I understand,I will double check that spacer,I have a John Deere parts catalog on CD that shows everything about the 4000 series and a lot of other lawn mowers, tractors,JD generators,JD snowmobiles, even some JD bicycles. I paid about $75.00 for it. If you ever need technical information, there is a gentleman that goes by the name Doctor Deere,he is a super guy to talk to and really knows the JD 4000 series( amongst other JD info)I have talked to him via email and he has helped me alot.
What kind of cutter are you getting? I hope it is not a 513 series.
