So more drama. I put everything back together. Started it up. It sounded a bit odd at first but then sorta settled in. I think it's possible the new joint was settling into place. I too it for a spin around the yard and noise is back but in different scenario. If i get up to speed on the driveway and then quickly release forward pedal, it again makes banging noise as tractor comes to a stop. It does this fairly consistently a few times. Engine speed not affecting noise as it did previously. I put mower on and mowed a bit until storm blew up. Seemed ok while mowing but noise in stopping scenario continued after mowing.
after dinner since it was raining i pulled the plastic off the tractor again. The noise sounded like something hitting the drive shaft when the tractor flexed. Here's what i found when i got down to the shaft.
The zerk is beat up on both sides. I replaced the u-joint with an non-JD that has the zerk in the end cap. I read about many people doing this but now i wonder if tolerances are looser on later models compared to my 2210. Upon closer inspection the shaft gets awful close to the steel plate under the drive shaft on one side and the zerk is too close. I kick myself for not spinning the shaft a few times prior to re-assembling the first time. So now i have to decide what to do: replace with JD u-joint with diff. zerk placement, file/cut some metal, or remove zerk and replace with some flat bolt.
Has anyone used u-joint with zerk in end of cup on 2210 and been successful?

/ new rattle/vibration on 2210 -> what might it be?
So to close the loop on this i didn't want to wait any longer to find a flush zerk so I cut the top off the banged up zerk and put the tractor back together. No funny noises now. No banging. Good deal.
So be warned - on 2210 replace u-joint with OEM or at least one with central zerk.
