Hiya,

Anyone have one of the new Ruger 308 "scout" rifles yet? I just read the Rifleman test but we all know how "friendly" they are to the makers.

I asked the local dealer if they had any and they are still waiting, so I would like to have the opinion of someone that has one for real.

I don't have a scout, but I do own a few Ruger 77 Hawkeye bolt actions. The scout borrows the hawkeye action. It's a very sound action.

The scout seems like a great package. If you pick one up, let us know what you think of it.

Ruger (with the exception of the Mini 14) makes fine rifles, especially the bolt action variety. As mentioned in the post above, it should be a smooth, accurate piece.

I promise... I really don't mean to try to start a war... but what's wrong with the Mini 14? To clarify, I don't have one, but I've shot a couple and it's on my list to get someday. They seem popular enough, I was just wondering what was bad about them.

And I've seen a couple of articles about the scout rifle and I (think) I would like one - I just can't go that much money for something that I wouldn't shoot that often.

I was going to ask that too. I had one years ago before moving to heavy barrel bolt gun.

I had it shooting sub-moa when scoped, with handloads. I just wish they had more options for an HBAR version. There are a couple companies doing that now.

My only complaint, was the Ranch version threw it's brass really hard, and really far. It was a pain if there was someone on the bench next to you. And, picking up the brass to reload was a pain.

Otherwise, it is a nice miniature Garand.

They are fun for a gun that's good to 4moa at best ... never had a problem per say ... just terribly sloppy inaccurate guns

Yeah, they are fairly reliable but accuracy is lacking. For a few more bucks a guy can have a much more accurate AR-15.

You guys must have got the lemons. I know they are not known for match accuracy. But, there were four of us shooting them when I had mine. All were pretty accurate. Mine scoped with handloads shot great.

Biggest issue I saw was the flying brass, mediocre factory trigger, and lack of a heavier barrel.

I would expect the Mini-14 to function in lots of environments too. The AK-47 is sloppy, but you can toss it in the mud, stomp on it, pick it up, and start shooting.

If the "308 Scout" is anything like my Uncles old 77V 25-06, it should be a nice rifle.

i too have the mini 14. . . its good for about 75yards maybe 100 yards but after that you aren't going to keyhole any shots. heck at 100 yards i think it would be hard to get more than 1 out 5 shots in a silver dollar.
but they are fun to shoot

Hi,

I'm really only interested in the Ruger Scout because, well mainly, I don't have one, not because I need another rifle. Put it this way, when the Dr asked my wife at my daughters first checkup if we had any guns in the house, she said: "Oh yes, we have enough for everyone."

I had a mini-14 a while back, it tore up the brass something aweful and was a 5 minute gun at best, the Colt H-bar I replaced it with shoots A LOT better. (I used to shoot the DCM course with a guy that put huge hours into a Mini-14 and had it shooting as good as the skinny barrel AR's and NM Garands at 200 yards so they can be made to shoot, I'm way to lazy for that much work when you can order a CMP AR that will shoot as good as a super match M1A out of the box)

I don't need another 308 either, I can always drag out one of my M1A's or my STG-58 FAL.

I'm just looking for opinions on the Ruger Scout as I was a fan of Jeff Cooper and the whole scout rifle concept. (Although I guess I could just drag out my Springfield "tanker" M1 and slap a scope on it and save money)

Thanks,

Tom
