Darn! My wife saw that pic and it rekindled her desire to tap our woods! We helped a friend sugar last year and is was such hard work I'd hoped it had extinguished her desire. Fat chance. If you get an email from my wife fishing for a tour of your sugar house, please don't be in town! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

But it sure looks nice!

Hi Alan! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That looks pretty nice! Especially that BLUE attachment sitting outside!

This past weekend Jenny and I were invited out to play cards with some other folks. During a lull in the action, discussion turned to what people had planned for their retirements. One of the folks mentioned that a friend of theirs had purchased 10 acres in Vermont and was planning on making maple syrup!

I mentioned that I might be able to contact some friends that I know in Vermont to get some information for their friends. It sounds like the property they bought already has "the equipment" that is needed. I'll have to find out what exactly they have. I also mentioned that they should tell their friend to make sure and really do his homework, because from what I learned, you don't just whack a tap into a tree and get maple syrup!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You have that right. 10 acres isn't alot of land. Of course it could be wall to wall maples if he's lucky. As with everything the initial output is the most expensive. Trust me on that!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif There's alot more then just equipment involved. It's really a year round project especially if you burn wood. Of course he will need a good tractor also!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I have some good websites if he wants them.
Take care and thanks for the nice comments!!!!! Your right thou. That blue go's nicely with the sugar house. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Alan,
Great picture. Looks like a great set up. Makes me wish that Feb/March was here so I could sugar.

Hey Pete, I'll use the old excuse it's not done yet but when it is I'll call you!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'm sure up there some were you have a big sugaring outfit. Most are looking for new trees and are willing to lease by the tap. They'll pay more if you run the pipeline less if they do. Don't know how many taps you have but wouldn't hurt to help pay the tax's and no manuel labor involved. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Take care

HI Phil Thanks. Did you pick up a rig yet?
Alot of small ones at Bascoms in New Hampshire or build your own. I hear you on being ready to sugar. Still have to brick the evaporator, let it dry then boil some water to see how it works. Can't wait to see the steam!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Alan,
I only have 5 sugar maples. Get about 1/2 of a gallon of syrup each year. First year I used cinder blocks and lasagna pans. Last year we had all that snow - I wasn't going to dig down through 5 feet of snow to get a stable base for a fire /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif So I cheated and used the gas grill side burner.

For my small needs this is sufficient. I would love to have a set up like yours but don't have enough sugar maples. This year I went looking again in the hopes that I would find more. But the oaks are pretty good at establishing a monoculture.

Daryl -- Sorry, just noticed your question. The snow is almost gone today. Just a few inches left under the trees. We got about 2 feet from that last storm. With all the rain since then I'm amazed any is left at all!
