Hi Everyone,
I've been reading posts from this website for a number of weeks and finally decided to join "the family".

I live in South Texas on 9 acres that I maintain myself. Up to this point, I've paid someone else to mow the pastures or been fleeced by local rental shops when I've needed to rent a bobcat to move dirt. I'm ready to buy my own machine so I've posted in the Buying thread for a start!

Thanks,
Jeannette

To TBN Jeanette. Is your land mostly flat or rolling hills? What all are you raising and what else are you planning to do? Before buying, get a feel for the different features and how you will be using them. My older sister's name is Jeanette but I am sure that you aren't that old.

Hi mddorange,
I have 10 acres and the land is flat. 7 of those acres are a pasture for my horses that I pay someone to mow a few times each season. He does sloppy work, usually breaks something else on my property that I have to pay to fix, and charges me more than I think his work is worth. The remaining 3 acres around the house are mowed with a riding mower but I'm hoping to be able to use a shredder there as well. Other uses will be to move and stack round bales, fencing, move dirt and road base (occasionally), or taking care of about 100 trees that I've planted in the last few years. I maintain my property myself so a reliable tractor is a must for me. I've been looking at a Mahindra 4540 and drove a Massey Ferguson 1742 yesterday. I want a basic tractor, but one that's not going to become too cumbersome when using the front end loader. I was thinking that the power shuttle would come in handy when using the front end loader but the 4540 doesn't come with it. The Massey Ferguson was really nice but a lot more expensive.

Thanks for your feedback.

My property is similar to what you describe and my tractor is used for what you say you need one for. My JD 4105 is a 'bare bones' rig that JD doesn't really include in their advertising or glossy brochures. Depending on your local dealership situation, you could consider it. My CX300 FEL handles 4x5 rounds of hay with ease around the property & I help a neighbour bring in his 500+ rounds of hay when he harvests.

Hi Wagtail and thanks for your response. I hadn't considered a John Deere because they are typically much more expensive here in South Texas. I'll do some research on the 4105 and see what I can find. Thanks again.
