New to arc welding--very new

Rod wasn't cleaned down to shiny metal. Now it's time to learn how to actually weld. Thanks for all the suggestions and now if I have another problem I can check all the ideas you guys presented. BTW the 7018 rod is what the guy at the welding shop suggested. Now I have downloaded a rod chart. And for the amount of welding I expect to do I'll get rods in the future from HF--unless someone here says they are no good.

The rods I have bought from HF havent been too good. Your Mileage May Vary. The US forge rods from Tractor supply have been excellent. Can't go wrong with Lincoln or Horbart either.

Where in Oregon are you? If you're close to me I'd give you a handful of 6011 since I have most of a 50lb box... I'm with k0ua, the harbor freight rods work but brand name rods work better...

Rangerfredbob, Thanks for the offer. I'm just outside Estacada, a long way from Dayton. Probably cheaper to buy name brand rods than to pay for shipping.

I've seen rods shipped Priority Mail, at a reasonable flat rate for whatever you can fit in the box. I sold some tools on Ebay that way and the P.O. counter clerk nearly broke a fingernail trying to lift the box, she immediately slapped a 'caution-heavy' sticker on it.

Yeah, that's not too close . If I didn't have enough rods at an auction last saturday I ended up with two rod organizers with probably 40 more pounds of various rods for $25... sounded cheap for specialty rods...
