I finally made the plunge and purchased a used B21 TLB with 780 hrs for $15,000, so far I am very pleased. I have put about 4 hours on it playing with stumps and digging ditches, I have figured everything out from the labels (owner's manual is on order) and the only question is the what does the round knob directly under the seat that says open / close on it do?

Thanks

Andy

Congrats on the new tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
The knob is probably for controlling how fast the 3PH will lower. Since you have the BH on, it will not make any changes to tractor operations.

Thanks for the quick reply, I was guessing that it had something to do with the rear hydraulics.

Any idea how many gallons of UDT hydraulic fluid I will need to do a complete change out on the B21?

Andy, congratulations on the new tractor. Mine now has 1200+ hours without a problem. From my experience loading the rear tires will add greatly to stability and traction. Also a tooth bar for the loader really helps with digging.

The hydraulic system uses 7.26 gals of fluid.

MarkV -

Thanks for the response, so far I have been very pleased with the B21. I wanted something a little bigger but I came across this B21 in pretty good shape, the only thing I can find wrong with it after 5 hours of use is a small drip in one of the cylinders that swings the backhoe from side to side.

A tooth bar is on my wish list along with trying to find a ~8" bucket for trenching work.

Andy, if my memory serves me right a 12” backhoe bucket is the smallest that Kubota offered on the B21. There may be some after market manufacture that makes something smaller. Keep in mind that buckets that small can have trouble dumping if you have the same kind of sticky clay we do here in Georgia. As a reference I believe the 12” bucket from Kubota was something like $400.

I was going to do some measuring and see what the width of the boom was where the bucket attaches since this will be the limiting factor on bucket size. I need to dig several hundred feet of trenches for gutter drain lines and I can do it with the 16" bucket, I will just be moving twice the amount of dirt.

The buckets for the B21 and other small Kubota BH's (B4672-90 and probably BH75) are interchangeable. The smallest is a 10". As stated these bucket will not release clay very well.

Please help me decide which to purchase:
a used B21, 750 hours, 2 years old, coming from a tool rental fleet
a L2650, 500 hours 10 years old, with loader
a L2900, 200 hours 4 years old, with loader.
The B21 is a HST, the other two are GST.
I need to plow in the winter, and do general yard work. I have 5 acres, 4 of which are currently trees. I expect, I will try and increase the yard size at some point. (therefore it is reasonable to expect to do light logging with the tractor)

Also: can someone explain the differences between the B21 and the other B series tractors. The unit with the backhoe weighs more than the L2900. I do not understand. The B21 has very high ground clearance. The B21 has a narrow wheel base on the frame size. The frame design is important to me. I would also like to know the differences in terms of 3 pt. hitch use.

They all seem to have good ground clearance, (which is important living in NH, our major crop is large granite rocks).
I would like to be able to travel across out front yard and not tear up the lawn. I would also like to go through the woods with out getting stuck, (mud or rocks)
the two L series have turf tires, the B21 has R4's.
I plan on getting a 5 foot grading blade to use for plowing verses the bucket. Does this work?

Any help from current owners would be appreciated.
Thank you
