Building a hunting cabin in the NC woods and have been shopping for a stove for some time. After wrestling with airtight/boxstove decisions I've finally found the one I want. Drove from Durham to Rocky mount last night and picked one like this up for $200. It needs some new firebricks and stove paint but thats all. It is probably too much for my little cabin, but it'll last me forever and a day. Its a heavy stove, probably 400+ lbs. I'll use the front end loader to lift it up onto my deck, then furniture dollies to get it inside.
I'll need to reenforce the floor joists under it. Probably just use a bottle jack and some lumber. Better safe than to have sagging joists.
Planning on using the stainless, triple wall stove pipe. My dad heated our house with a Fisher just like this when I was a kid, so it kind of spoke to me.

Mor nin Slacker,
Nice lookin stove ! I have a Glacier Bay in my Ct house cellar that looks quite similar but is a bit smaller and its a great little stove that does a good job of heating the cellar and first floor ! I bought mine used and the thing is built very well and will probablly last forever. I get some cracked firebrick every year also..

Good luck with your new stove !

good stove - i've used that same model @ the farm for many years. just moved it to the barn and replaced it with a Jotul.

IMHO, do NOT paint it. just wire brush it and put some black stove polish on it. the polish will burn off (open some windows).

Psuedofarmer,

Thanks for the advice. I've been reading alot of woodstove sites and everyone seems to recommend against stove polish. They say that the polish does not protect the metal from additional rust and lasts only a short time.
They recommend a high temp stove paint (1200 deg type). That will protect from rust and last a couple years. The story is that stoves used to be polished once a week because no paint existed that would handle the temps, but that hasn't been the case for about 15 years. I have not personally used polish or paint, hence I'm searching the net for info. I'll report back after I'm done fixin' her up.

Slacker,

When I bought our Osbourne a couple of years ago they sent two cans of high temp black paint with the stove. I had to use it since the installer of the stove, no not me, :D, stepped on TOP of the stove and left a nice boot print of scratches. Sprayed the paint and it was good to go. This is our third season with the stove and the paint has held up just fine.

This year I finally got a stove themometer. Its supposed to be on a single wall chimney but our is a double wall. I just sit it on top of the stove and the themometer's magnet holds it in place. Seems like the highest temp I have seen was maybe 300/350 degrees which should be at the low end since the inner pipe had to be hotter. Anyway my point being if the stove is under 400 degrees there is a long way to go before 1200 degrees. :D

Later,
Dan

Of course that stove is "illegal" to install in our area due to lack of certification with EPA. It is a smoker and inefficient compared to todays secondary combustion woodstoves. You'll use more wood, smoke more, creososte the chimney more, and can't even see the fire.

Myself, I would pass on that and spend a few hundred more okay, maybe 800, and buy a brand new country stove made in Auburn WA. Hah! Local plug.

I recently acquired a Fisher Big bear or mama bear which looks nearly the same except has two doors on the front. I think the pictured fisher is the baby bear and shouldn't weigh 400 unless it's full of muddy ash. I had a hard time finding much information on the stove but did find out that it is not an efficient appliance which is fine since it was delivered to my good buddy's pole barn for use as a shop stove..... illegaly. The cast iron feet of the stove are really nice as is the cast door mural. Nice touch.

Please post installed pics. I get a big kick out of how people set up their hearths. Stonework, brickwork, fire, and all.

Nice old Fisher! Good find.

I just re-bricked my current stove after 13 yrs ... should have done it a while ago as the bricks that looked good weighed about as much a balsa wood.

Like others, I use stove paint ... works great. Wear and tear over many years does take it's toll, like any painted surface.

Slacker, I purchased a fisher stove (Made in Barrie, Ontario) three years ago and it works good. It came with the original owner's manual with installation instructions. If you would like a copy of it pm me.

Luremaker, which models does the manual cover? Though my buddy won't get a permit for the install, the manuals usually give minimum clearances to combustibles. He wants to do the best install he can on the big fisher but I couldn't find setback info.

Thanks
