ih b414
hello every one, new to the forum. i recently picked up a ih b414, thing would hardly run when i went and looked at it ended up having to come along it onto trailer. but did see it run and see the hydraulics worked. got it home filed and adjusted points and drove it off trailer ran decent but had no power in high range. did more digging and found it had a blown head gasket between cylinder 2 and 3. replaced that along with a new coil and tractor runs great no smoke no knocking. worked it for 3 hours yesturday cutting ditches and i have found a problem i believe. oil pressure goes from a strong 40psi idle cold to 8-10psi idle hot and 15psi high idle. so it would seem the ole girl has some hours on her. but it dosnt burn oil, dosnt knock, fires right up, didnt see any thing in oil when i dumped it. im thinking this is a oil pump related issue. your thoughts?

Have you changed the oil?
Do you know what grade oil is in it?
Could try a 15-40 or 20-50.
It could be the relief valve, the oil pump or bearing clearances, but many of those older engines didn't run a lot of pressure when warmed up.

brand new mobil delvac 15 40. when i looked at it the oil was full of gas. so i dumped it and put cheap 10w30 with some sea foam, ran it a bit then changed to the mobil 15 40 and changed filter

Got the IH3444, same situation. Pulled pan, mic crank, new main and rod bearings, new oil pump gears. 45psi oil pressure when "smoking" hot now at idle. Rotella regular dino 15w-40 oil. BD154 engine. No easy fix, but a lasting one. It can all be done in frame. Find a good engine mechanic if you can't do it your self.

just took it up the road a mile or so. full idle high range in 4th gear pulling hills and such. hot idle is now at 15psi hot full idle is at 20psi. im begining to think that between a crank full of gas, then a crank full of fresh oil and sea foam then finally some decent oil. somthing or sludge has knocked loose plugged or causing relief valve to stick as it seems to be getting better the more i run it. going to keep running for a bit and see if it cures its self. if not the pan will have to come off i guess

I'm not sure where the relief valve is in that motor,
if it is accessible externally maybe pull and clean it.
As a consideration years ago if a smallblock chevy had 10psi per thousand rpm we considered that good.
And you do have that.

Relief valve in the BD154 diesel engine is in the oil pump housing. I measured the spring, and added a shim to bring it up to proper tension. Also made the oil pump gear plate smooth from all the years of running. The ends of the pump gears rub against the plate causing a slight worn area. Flattening the plate restores it to new specs, and reduces the pressure leakage pass the worn part.
