Well after a lot of reasearch and searching, I finally bagged myself a Deere. I got a 2000 LX 277 all wheel steer. It has the 17hp Kawasaki air cooled motor that purrs like a kitten with 377 hours on it. I am not sure if that is considered a lot. It has a 42" deck, although I was hoping for a 48". I am hoping to work out some kind of trade with the 42 for a 48. The 42 is in great shape, even the paint on the underside looks great. The all wheel steering is awesome. It turns on a dime. The tires are in great shape as well.
The tractor is very clean underneath. I did not see any oil leaks, or grease globs. All the paint is great under there. No rust anywhere that I could see. The seat is in perfect condition. The upper part of the hood is cracked, but that is the cheap part of the hood. It starts right up, although I think it could use a new battery. It was turning over hard when I got it home, and the battery light stayed on for a couple of minutes after it started. Is the choke lever supposed to have to be held in the up position when you start? If I let go it springs back down to the off position.
He didn't have the manual for it, so I will have to do some searching for that, and a tech manual. It needs a good tune up I'm sure. Is there anything else I should specifically look at? I think I may take it in to my local dealer and have them run through it.
He was asking $1500 which I thought was a decent deal. As I had a 4 hour drive to go get it, he agreed to let it go for $1200, which I think is a great deal for this beast. What do you guys think?
Thanks to all for the information you have given me in my quest to find a mower. I am now a proud Deere owner. I'll keep you updated as I get it in tip top shape in preparation for the summer season.
Thanks
Bill
