Just bought a (supposedly) 1974 Massey 150 gas burner because it was too good of a deal to pass up and my 9n engine is gone and I need to mow. Not familiar with this tractor at all, but most of it seems fairly straight-forward. It runs pretty good but needs the carb cleaned or overhauled and I've ordered a manual to start tinkering with other problems. Also been trying to search the forums for a few specific issues, but between my dial-up internet speeds and not knowing what to call things, I've not had much success. My apologies if most of this has been answered elsewhere, but hopefully someone can help with my remaining list:

1. The dash. All of the gauges are toast and I have replacements ordered but
a. the original hour meter/tach has a gear drive and I don't see anywhere to plug it in. I'm assuming it was originally a generator and has been converted to an alternator. How do I get a tach reading and do I need to just buy an analog hour meter?
b. There's a plate where there used to be a slide lever on the left side of the dash. What did that lever do?

2. There is a pedal on the right rear floor plate that attaches to the axle. Whatever it is supposed to do, it doesn't do it anymore. Can someone tell me what it was for?

3. For the rear hydraulic controls, there are two levers. The one to the right controls lift. What is the one on the left supposed to do?

4. Hopefully I managed to attach a picture of the diverter that goes to a rear remote. It doesn't look like anything I've found online. If I screw a new handle onto the left stick, should I just be able to turn it and have hydraulics at the remote. I know the most common three-way valve you can only use one thing at a time, but I haven't seen another one like this one.

5. There's a strange box behind the dash that is not connected to anything. Hopefully there is a picture of it as well as I would really like to know what it went to.

Thanks very much for any feedback.

Hey, my pictures worked! Forgot one question - is there a common hydraulic leak point at the rear of the tractor? I have fluid leaking out from somewhere underneath the pto shaft but can't tell where. Figure it's a rear seal of some sort. Fluid is milky, but the tractor will lift at least 750 lbs (525# mower + 225# friend standing on it) with no hesitation to full height. Planning a fluid change in the morning and if it's a common seal, maybe I can fix that too.

Also figured out the 2nd hydraulic lever does have an effect on lift, but I don't get how they work in tandem. Found a manual for the hydraulic system for download and hoping that will shed some light, but please share if there's an idiot's guide. Thanks!

You can get an aftermarket tach at any auto parts store that runs off the ignition wiring. That lever on the left side of the dash is for the multipower transmission. It controls a hydraulic clutch that engages a higher range in the transmission. The pedal on the right rear heel is for differential lock, you have to hold it down to engage. That strange box under the dash was probably the voltage regulator for the old generator. I can't be much help with the hydraulics as I am having issues with my massey 150 three point as well.

The left hydraulic lever is the position control--adjust and hold the vertical position of the implement on the 3 point hitch. The full up position of this lever is called the transport position and is the position when using the draft control.

The right lever is the draft control that's use for plowing with a moldboard plow, subsoiler, etc. The linkage in the draft system is a feedback mechanism that responds to changing resistance (called draft) on the plow due to harder or softer soil. The draft system makes slight up/down adjustments in the plow depth to keep the draft constant. When you're not using a plow, the draft lever should be in the transport position (full up).
