Tractor
Yanmar YM1500 and YM226
Me and a friend drove 180 miles into the recently snowed upon Ozarks in North Arkansas today to check out a YM226 I found on Craigs List. The tractor was ice cold to the touch, and hadn't been started in several days. I turned the glow plug on which is new to me since I live in the usually balmy South. About 5 turns of the starter and my new to me tractor was running and I was off to the races testing out the PowerShift [I think Powershift is the correct term for the YM226's transmission} There was ice, snow and mud to test the tractor out in.

Needless to say, I am more than happy with this easy to shift and much roomier tractor as compared to my YM1500. My YM1500 is a powerful and great tractor, especially since I just rebuilt the engine. But I am in awe of how much a 3 cylinder with large turf tires and shift on the fly without losing speed or rotation of your implements has made me smile. It's an early Christmas for me. I did some trading and cash payments and I got this tractor for $2400.00 give or take a few bucks. The asking price was $3000 so I feel good about it. I took my friend who is a diesel engine and equipment repair and rebuild specialist. He gave it the once over and other than a leaking fuel return line that he fixed on the spot, he gave it his thumbs up.

I also got the original operation manual and a 3" thick original factory service manual. I was about to have to spring for the turf rims and tires for my YM1500 as I was really cleating up the ground on my property and with the past 3 wet summers I was going to be digging holes unless I dropped the $1500 for new rims and tires I have seen out there. This YM226 has turf tires in good shape so I can breathe easier as summer approaches. The overall condition of this tractor is good to excellent and after I do some general maintenance, I think I have a keeper. It's not a 4 wheel drive model but I live on hilly ground and nothing steep or muddy to contend with.

I have had a back injury and the overall size and room to get onto and off of, as well as just driving the 226 around amazes me. Instead of doing a move similar to mounting a horse, both on and off my YM1500, I can now climb up and actually have room for my boots to fit in place.

If anyone has any ready information about how expensive and difficult/simple obtaining a decent FEL for a YM226 would be, I would really appreciate it. And any good ideas or things to be wary of as I transition to the YM226 from the YM1500 would be appreciated as well.

Also, thanks to everyone who replied to my post last week asking about getting a YM226 vs. my now secondary tractor YM1500.
I must find out more about the PTO generators. I could really use one now, and I think it would be a great thing to have around in case of power outages, which I have seen 3 of in the past couple of weeks.

Thanks for reading my gloating post about my new to me tractor and I would appreciate any feedback on the price I paid and on the YM226 in general.

I will post some pics tomorrow after I clean this baby up some. Lots of mud in the area this last few weeks.

Peace,
Torx

You did good!

I just replied in your other thread about maybe using an inverter to run small power tools. But to run your house during an outage that probably isn't sufficient.

You'll love that model!

I know where there is a 226d with Yanmar loader for parts in Eastern NC. $700 gets it. Email me for details if interested.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the info and the links that will save me and you folks a lot of time.
I was over-excited about getting this tractor and I have been tinkering around on it all day. No major problems.
The water pump seems to drag a lot and make some noise when I hand turn it. It's fairly hard to hand turn it at all. Checking priced on new water pumps I was surprised at how inexpensive they were. And it looks prettyt easy to get the pump on and off. I still have my trusty 1500 in case I decide to replace the water pump.
There are some cosmetic flaws and some lights out but those are fun to work on.
As far as a PTO generator, I wasn't planning to power my entire house. I would like to be able to run a small refrigerator and a maybe a small window unit A/C or if cold outside, maybe a small heater and an emergency lamp to do some reading by.

I was reading a post at this link by CamshaftLF stating he runs his whole house with a 10KW at 21hp. Not sure if I'm reading it right though.

Thanks for all the replies and I look forward to reading up on all the links and info. you folks have given me.

Congrads. on your new to you tractor. You'll like the 3 cylinder engine and love the power shift

Yes you can run your whole house with a pto generator on that tractor. I run a 50kw capacity WinPower off of a 22 hp F935 3 cylinder diesel lawnmower with mine. Furnace, well, stove, microwave, TV, lights, garage doors and the UVerse router and computers. Sure, the mower is a lot less than the 100hp THEORETICALLY required, but necessity is the Mother ....

That is interesting. Is that a gearbox mounted on the mower? Did you just take the driveshaft off the mower to hook up the generator?

Yes, as Winston1 remarks, that IS interesting. I like the throughput on your mower. I have a King*Cutter mower with its gearbox mounted in the same position. You must have crafted a nice way to get dual use out of your mower. Maybe you could mow when not using your generator?
May I ask how much the WinPower costs and also if you are connecting at your breaker box or at the power companies shut off switches, or elsewhere? I'm amazed with your setup. Do you have any pics of the wiring disconnects for the other end?
thank You ,

For a generator hookup installation, assuming you have a main breaker panel, it's hard to beat getting an interlock kit made for your main panel (some overpriced ones are at Generator InterLock Kit) and installing a new breaker at the top of your panel to backfeed power from the PTO generator when you need it. The interlock kit is designed for a specific panel (so do some internet searching) and mechanically prevents you from accidentally backfeeding the street (dangerous!) with your generator.

When running your whole house with a PTO generator, you do have to remember simple things like not running large electric appliances that require their own circuit (dryer, stove, water heater, etc.) and depending on the horsepower of your tractor and the rated kW of your generator you may need to avoid running other high-power items at the same time as well. My YM1510 and a NorthStar 7.2kW PTO generator work fine for my house & garage, including the 240V well pump. I just keep the electric range and dryer off and turn off whatever I'm not actively using.

Keep in mind that a tractor running the PTO at 540RPM makes a lot of racket, and you'd also be surprised at the amount of racket a generator head makes if you've never heard one, too.

Roonabeck (or anybody) - did you ever try setting up for minimal loads such as evening lighting, by shifting the PTO to a higher gear then running the tractor at lower rpm? Was it quieter? Also, the Nebraska charts show optimum fuel economy for these around 1800 rpm as I recall.

YM1510 has additional pto speeds something like 800 and 1200 rpm, no?

Yeah, I do that primarily when I'm using it as a remote power source away from buildings. Note that the 1510 is a 3-cyllinder, so it doesn't have the torque or power at the lower RPMs. In PTO 2nd gear, I run the engine at just over 1500 RPM and that keeps the needle in the right spot on the generator (versus 2400 engine RPMs in PTO 1st gear). I can run a single large power tool in that setup -- my largest is a big 9" angle grinder (rated 15 amp) which causes a noticeable engine speed drop on startup. I've never actually tried PTO 3rd.

The engine is quieter in that configuration, but the generator is running at the same speed so it still makes the same amount of racket, which pretty much requires earplugs if you're working near it. It would presumably be easier on the fuel consumption, but I've never used it long enough that way to make any measurement.

I found the gearbox for sale on eBay. Its a standard production unit made for increasing or decreasing standard pto rpm. I'm using it to reduce my 2100 rpm-mower pto input rpm to an appropriate level for the WinPower's 540 rpm needs. I mounted the gearbox on the mower deck's gearbox bracket. To change over to the 540 output, all I have to do is pull off the driveshaft from the mower deck and push it onto the reducer box's input shaft and drop in the retainer bolt. To get the right voltage and frequency, I use a Kill-A-Watt meter (19.99 at Costco) which can measure both. It's quiet, competent and simple. It uses less fuel than my other larger farm tractor and lets me use that for other needs if necessary. This setup works any of my 540 type 6 spline devices (water and hydraulic pumps, an air compressor and a hay elevator) if necessary.
