Tractor
ford 1920
Hi Folks,
I have a Ford 1920. The Clutch PEDAL will not move. I know how to free a stuck pressure plate to disk, but this is not the case. The pedal itself will not travel. I am guessing the fingers on the pressure plate may be rusted or something, but cannot tell. Any ideas would be great. Looks like I may have to split her, hoping someone may have a better idea. The rod that transverses the tractor that the clutch pedal lever is attached to does apear to be free, as it will move a little, but feels like I am pushing against something fairly solid when I bear down on the pedal. Thanks so much, ERic

give us some background.. is this a new to you tractor? or one you have had? did this suddenly happen or get gradually worse?

has it recently sat up for a long time?

have you double checked for any mechanical external problems sticking the pedal?

post back

Hi,
It is a new to me tractor. The prior owner rarely used it, in fact it sat all winter outside as it was at his camp. I tried for a while to buy it and finally did last week. I assume it stuck from sitting around unused, he loosened the clutch adjustment rod enough so it would actuate the clutch safety so he could start it. and used it that way until I told him he would ruin it unless he had the clutch repaired. Nothing external really, all there is is the pedal, an adjustable linkage rod which attaches to an external "ear" that is welded to a rod that goes into the tractor which I assume actuates the throwout bearing inside. I know the rod that goes "through" the tractor is free, something is stuck inside. I cannot see anything else external. I bought it that way knowing I would have to repair it, but it will be worth it. I removed the loader and the backhoe already. Thanks for the interest in helping! ERic

I wonder if the engine clutch splines are rusted onto the transmission main shaft, or if there's a release bearing carrier that rides on a sleeve extension on the front of the tranny. My IT manual does not show that part, nor does it not show it. Sounds like a split is the safest cure, maybe not needing much for new parts. I sure wouldn't reef on it too hard, as the parts inside are smaller than the parts you can push on now. You'll be happy you split it when you find out what a nice machine you got.

Disconnect the rod leading from the clutch pedal to the cross-shaft that enters the clutch housing. Determine whether the pedal is seized on its shaft, or the cross shaft is seized in the housing. Take appropriate action to free up the seized parts, if found. Note that the cross shaft is supported by and pivots in the housing on both sides of the tractor. If both pedal and cross-shaft are able to be moved, split the tractor and free up the release bearing sleeve from its support.

Hello nhironworks. I think that your throw out bearing is rusted to the thing it slides on. If you have an inspection plate, in the bellhousing, remove it and spray the throw out bearing with some penitrating oil. Let it sit, try working it, keep spraying it and let it sit.work it some more. It may losen up, and be just fine.

I would just split it and be done with it. While your at it put a new clutch and throwout bearing in it. Then you know have the peace of mind that you will have years of trouble free service. Splitting it isnt as bad as it sounds

A little troubleshooting beforehand won't hurt. It's not like splitting a tractor is something any of us wants to do for entertainment.

If it were mine; Disconnect clutch pedal and rod. Put a pipe wrench on the ear of the shaft sticking out of the transmission case. Put a little bit of pressure on it and tap on the pipe wrench handle lightly with a hammer watching for movement. If something breaks, go back in time and don't repeat the above procedure.:) Splitting the tractor might be the cheaper/safer route.
