Hey guys I'm seriously thinking about buying a yanmar 155D. Not sure on the year or the hour meter reading. Its a green tractor. The tractor is coming with a loader and a little disk. The guy said the only thing wrong with the tractor is it needs a battery since they have to jump start it every time to get it running, and he said the loader is a little out of alignment (not really sure what he is talking about) What would be a reasonable offer? The guy bought it for $1800 a few years back. What should i look at when I go drive it this weekend?

Will all my attachments for my ford 9n attach to this tractor? Can I get filters from napa or the auto parts stores? I called a tractor dealer and they said these tractors are a bear to start in the cold due to low compression. Can a diesel really have low compression?

welcome to TBN!! The 155 is equivalent to the 1300 grey market (I believe), but at any rate the 155 was made for the US market and books and parts are available for them. $1800 sounds like a fantastic price to me. Hoye lists that a 1300 D from an individual at about $3100! A loader would take it beyond that. Now the loader may be twisted, but can probably be straightened.

It may need more than an battery--the voltage regulators on these is not the most robust thing. The starting problem will be limited to individual tractors. Mine started fine this winter without external heat down to single digit temps. They have a thermal starting system, not glow plugs, to heat the intake manifold and air. If they do not start when the temps are reasonable then there may be a compression problem.

Hoye has a guide for Yanmar tractor buyers.

Cool Thanks I'm thinking I'm gonna offer them $600 or $700. What do you know about filters should i just order them through hoye?

I'll second Hoye. They are a great supplier.

I had a 155d for several years before selling it to my brother. It's a SOLID little tractor. $1800 sounds like a great price for that tractor. At that price, I would consider it a steal.

There are a number of very good dealers here on the site. Hoye is one, but if you look through the messages in this forum you will find many others. Wayne at LMTC, Tractor Ernie, Lens12, EFC and others. It really depends where you are, You can see if one is closer than another. Hoye is in TX, LMTC is in southern Ohio etc.

Not really. They should hook up ok but then I think you would put the nose in the sky when you went to lift a disc or mower.

The YM 155 is simply smaller. Roughly half the the engine displacement of a 9N and roughly half the weight.

Jason,
I have a 155D with a loader. I paid $4K for it in upstate NY two years ago with a 42" woods bush hog included with 720 hrs (I think original). Mine starts up no problem in cold weather thanks to the block heater I installed this year. It is a small tractor (15 HP, about 13 HP PTO) but suits me fine. I run a 4' snowblower, 4' box blade, 42" rotary cutter and recently sold my 48" rear finish mower.

One thing to look at carefully is the front end. Is there play in the wheels such that it tows in and tows out? I've replaced my kingpin before and now I think the keyway which times the front wheel to the pitman arm has worn again causing excessive play. This is not one of Yanmars greatest designs. A single key is all that takes the stress in a 1" diameter kingpin shaft. Larger FWD tractors have the pitman arm extend down bolting externaly to the lower gearbox casting within the rim of the front wheel. This is a much more robust design. Aside from that I've been happy with my 155D. It's fun to tinker with.

Another thing that's peculiar about this model is there is no water pump. It's a natural convection circulation I guess. Also, there is typically no power steering.

Parts and filters are fairly easy to get and being a US model service manuals are readily available in english. Good luck and let us know how you make out!

Way less than half. 1135# give or take vs. 3,300# for a 9N. The 155 tractor itself is no bigger than some implements a 9N would pull.
