Upon initial purchase of the tiller, I set the skids on the side to the lowest height they can go and just control the depth of the tiller with the 3pt hitch. This seems to allow me to go about 7 to 8 inches at its deepest point. I am curious if you guys running tillers operate them in a different manner, and if I am doing any harm setting the skids as low as they can go. My logic was I didn't want to have two adjustments controlling depth. I figured I would zero out the tiller at it's lowest point and set depth with the 3 point. Is this correct for a newby? I know it's not rocket science but thought I would see advice before I go breaking anything!

if your in good soil thats fine the way your doing if ther is rocks i run mine high enough to give the rocks room to excape instead of geting caught in tines one other thing you don't want to try to plow any deeper than the center shaft that holds the tines

I like keeping skids a little higher as I don't go so deep on initial pass. They will sink on next pass as soil is softer.

If I want a shallow cut, I will adjust the feet. I have tried to control the depth with the 3 point but I am seldom satisfied with the results.

Great posts....

The second pass is always the way to go. You will gain three to four more inches of depth. I have extremely rocky soil and do not run the PTO at full speed. My Deere calls for 2450 RPM for the PTO and I seldom throttle up more than 1900.
My skids are also at their max.

You can also adjust your center link to a more forward position on you tiller. Gain of a couple of inches.

As I am in rocky soil, I place my drawbar in a floating position. The tiller will jump around more (because of the rocks) but the three point is not taking the punishment.

Hope this helps and good luck................
