Second tractor, in the market for my first set of tires. I’ve been reading up on the R1 vs R4 vs R14 debates and all but my question is more to sizing.

according to tractordata.com my 1987 JD950 came with a front 5.00-15 and rear 11.2-24. The tires on it are horribly cracked AG tires 44-18.00-20nhs rear and 27x8.5 15nhs.

This is where I’m lost… is one Standard and the other a metric? Or did someone totally change the tire & wheel size on me?

defiantly planning to get away from the turf tires so trying to figure out what I need in the r1/4/14 sizes.
Thanks in advance

What terrain will you be working in?

That's the correct turf size for the 950 from what I've seen on other tractors, both are in Inches, (44in dia, 18in wide on a 20in rim for the rear)

I’ll be mostly moving stone and running a backhoe with it. Driving on stone/mud/dirt roads. Won’t be driving on the grass much but also don’t want to destroy my yard when I do. So if I want to switch to an R1 or R4 or R14 I want to find that size? Is the OEM tire the same size as whats in there now?

If you change to R1/ag tires or R4/industrial tires you will need new wheel rims.

I believe R14 tires are a new variation on Turf Tires and may or may not fit your existing rims. R14 tires may be 4-ply tires like Turf Tires. You need to research ply count.

R4/industrial tires are always at least 6-ply tires, sometimes up to 10-ply tires; therefore very tough.

R1/ag tires are usually 4-ply tires as wall flex adds to traction. If you order additionally plies, flexibility decreases.

I believe the turf tires size listed on tractor data is for the 2wd version, sometimes TD is not completely accurate.

Ohhh ok I’m starting to follow better now… so I have a totally different wheel running the turfs than if I had R1’s. So I need wheels and tires not just tires

Correct, most tractors above the small subcompact use different wheels depending on tire type.

Great, I guess that answers my question then haha I just couldnt picture those tall knobby R1’s in place of the stout Turfs
